I have to agree with the article's conclusion that buyers should avoid vehicles with touch screen controls.

As I have said before, the Korando has physical buttons and knobs, and the touchscreen for satnav is usable if i just touch the microphone button and tell it where to go. A friend has a VW and hates the menus to get to anything.

and that's the main reason after many years/decades of VAG car ownership I've moved away from the brand..

Remember when the regs said that any screen in a car should not be visible to the driver ?

Still the case for TV or cinematographic content (£50 fine, no points), but no issue for information content.

Tall drivers with long legs are adversely affected, unless the screen can be brought within reach. I find the MMI controls in my Audi much easier and less distracting to use than the sometimes unresponsive far away touch screen in Mrs F's Peugeot 2008. Fortunately, the things most likely to be used or altered during a journey (temperature, radio volume, wipers, lights and indicators) are still on stalks or buttons.

The 308 T9 I owned had the frustrating touch screen for virtually everything including the heater, I wont buy a vehicle with this type setup every again.

Ill stick with the Toyota approach, radio / navigation is a touch screen but it also has steering wheel buttons & voice activation.

HVAC controls proper buttons / twisty knobs.

Good point - my son is 6ft 5" where much of his height is in his legs and proportionally he has a shorter arms.

Obvious that any time your eyes are off the road looking at a screen it is taking your attention. I won't have a car with a touch screen, Citroen had a great system years ago. A can sized pod with switches next to your hand meant any one could operate them by feel with a bit of practise.

I wholeheartedly agree.

Buttons, switches, stalks and knobs are the way to go.

I recall Vauxhall were mocked about the buttons on their Mokka when first introduced:

Perhaps they had the right idea - well perhaps there is a happy medium?

Cars have digital screens because of the huge increase in functionality the digital age has brought. The car would be swamped with switches, buttons and displays if any other solution were adopted.

The only things needing regular access are basic driving controls - steering wheel, brake pedal, indicators. Wipers, fan speed, lighting, are also often adjusted - typically retained as "hard" controls but are often now automated.

There is rarely a need to alter, whilst driving, cabin temperature, check when the next service is due, change the display from miles to kilometres etc etc. The temptation to "fiddle" arises because you can, not because you need to.

Increasingly cars are equipped with voice recognition largely rendering any debate over screen vs "hard" controls somewhat academic.

A return to traditional controls is unlikely - it is cheaper and quicker to change a few lines of code to accommodate new data or functionality. Hardwiring and modifying physical layouts is costly. The days of blanked off switches in base models will be over.

Exactly - the problem is of the makers' own making, encouraged by the easy acceptance of (largely unnecessary) fads by the buying public. I'm convinced some of them areinitially hare-brained ideas by nerds to see what can be computerised next, to add a new gizmo to sell the next model.

Well up to a point Lord Copper!!

My Skoda Superb has rotary controls/physical buttons for heat and ventilation. As it has climate control then other than demist there's actually little need to adjust other than 'her' side's temperature as middle aged ladies might need....

However the previous Skoda and the 'lingo only has manual aircon - on or off. You'd need to blend the cooled a/c with warmer air except in mid summer so temperature was twiddled pretty often. Fan speed and distribution also to keep screens clear/feet warm.

Interestingly even in summer in France the windows could steam up inside in rain if no aircon.

The radio etc is fine on a screen. Realistically it's little different to the push button pre-sets and tape player in my parent's cars 40+ years ago.

My current Q5 has a touch screen compared with my previous one which had a rotary knob. I can only assume that it saves money on the later model as the rotary knob system was miles safer and easier to use. I never touch the screen when I’m driving it, it’s unsafe.

My 2016 VW Touareg does have many options available on the touch-screen but things like the HVAC and radio all have separate switches or rotary knobs - I don't, and won't, touch the screen while driving.

You've hit the nail on the head, there only dangerous if you use them whilst driving, I'm the same as you, I never touch the screen when actually driving, luckily in my Swift there's actually no need to.

So there you are hammering along a motorway in heavy traffic when the sky clouds over, rain comes on and the screen starts misting up. You need to put on the demist, adjust the temp and put on the aircon to clear the screen. With knobs it was push a button and turn a knob. I wouldn't want to be trying to do that with a touch screen.

In fairness, most cars with touchscreen controls will also have a specific demist button.

I keep the aircon on all the time set to a comfortable temperature. No need to adjust it even with the onset of sudden heavy rain.
