Audi A2 - Why the Audi A2 was such a groundbreaking car - Steveieb

Fell in love with the A 2 when I met the club members at Kimbolton show.

Bought the TDi 90 version and things fell apart soon after . A pool of oil on the drive from a damaged oil filler and one thing after another went wrong.

But the colour in Piedmont Red and the shape , interior space and seating position

The Modern day equivalent is the I3

Must have another try and perhaps a petrol this time

I've always been a fan of the aluminium A2 - streets ahead of its similar priced but more successful 'elk test failure' German competitor.

If the've survived without collision, they still look good after 25yrs. But small car buyers usually have small budgets. My Jan 2003 Top Gear price guide lists a basic A2 at £13145......and a basic Ford Fiesta at £7995.

I had a 52 reg 1.4tdi for a couple of years, bought at a year old for £9k and took it to around 50,000 miles. Great car. A friend's son passed his test recently and his first car is one of similar age. I also saw one in a local supermarket car park the other week, a later 05 reg, but take the plates off and it looked brand new.

It wasn't just about price, as the original A class sold many many more and was similarly priced. In the early 2000s Audi simply weren't as strong a brand as Mercedes.

One of the most overrated cars in history.

A small car made of aluminium, making it expensive to buy, insure and repair.

Alu construction meant achieving adequate body strength required extremely wide A-pillars - two massive blind spots on either side of the windscreen.

Wheezy old VAG engines with no auto gearbox for RHD cars. A premium badge yet no automatic....unbelievable.

To call a car 'groundbreaking' is to imply it forced competitors to follow suit to try to match it. The A2, emphatically, failed to do that.

It came about in 2000. By comparison, the Honda Jazz came out in 2001, made of high strength steel with good forward visibility, a more flexible interior with magic rear seats, an excellent dual-spark engine, an auto box on sale from day one, a far more generous warranty, lower insurance, lower price. Guess which one is still on sale.

The A2 was engineering folly, nothing more.

It was about the same price as a Mercedes A class. Mercedes are apparently expensive to insure and repair too - both were insurance group 5. (Honda Jazz was grp 3)

Guess which 2002 model (when Jazz appeared here) is likely to be still around and corrosion free! To adapt an adage; the bitterness of poor durability remains long after sweetness of low price is forgotten.

I test drive one in 2001 with the intention of buying it. The dealer was insufferable but I never bothered to find a better one because the car was so incredibly dull to drive. I bought a Mini the next day.

I bought a Mini the next day.

You may not be able to judge, but did that turn out to be a better choice ? :-)

Audi A2 - Why the Audi A2 was such a groundbreaking car - Adampr

Yep. It was utterly flawless and a brilliant car to drive. I sold it 20 year ago, but it still has an MOT at 23 years and 100,000 miles old.

The A2 rear seats can be removed completely to create a mini van, superior to the Jazz.

The A2 rear seats can be removed completely to create a mini van, superior to the Jazz.

You don't need to remove them in the Jazz. Its superior design (in terms of space utilisation) of having the fuel tank under the from seats (rather than rears) allows the rear seats to fold down much lower. This means that with them folded (along with the taller roofline and more squared off rear end) results in more load space volume than in the A2 with its rears removed. And, being able to remove the rear seats entirely for more load space is only handy if you have somewhere to store them.

Also worth pointing out that on the original A Class, not only could the rear seats be unclipped and removed, so could the front passenger seat. So (assuming you have somewhere to put them) you can actually carry items not much shorter than the car itself and much longer than you can put in an A2 or Jazz (despite the A Class being much shorter). That feature also means you could easily sleep in it lying on the (completely flat) floor.

<< ... you can actually carry items not much shorter than the car itself and much longer than you can put in an A2 or Jazz ... >>

Reminds me a bit of the BMC Maxi, which could do that all through the 1970s ! On one occasion I got a kitchen worktop and a complete greenhouse (for assembly) in ours. Luckily I didn't have to travel many miles tho.

Chap I used to work with told me about how, as a young man, he had a Maxi. Fathers of any young lady he came to pick up, upon seeing his choice of car, assumed he must be a sensible and responsible type. They were of course unaware the Maxi's front and rear seats could be reclined to create a makeshift double bed!

My A2 came a close second to my Renault Espace for unreliability. Never let me down like the Espace which broke down twice on one journey but constant little niggles .

Hard ride and lack of low end torque from the 3 cylinder Diesel engine put me off 3 cylinder engines for life .

I was warned by a friend working at Audi HQ not to buy one !

lack of low end torque from the 3 cylinder Diesel engine put me off 3 cylinder engines for life .

And on quite a few occasions I've tried to explain that the lack of low down torque is to do with gearing and when the turbo kicks in, and that it has nothing whatsoever to do with cylinder count, but clearly to no avail!

Never used it for anything nefarious, as we were married in the early 60s :-) But in our earlier years camping with small kids, they slept in the Maxi while we had the tent to ourselves.

Test drove an A2 when new- had it on 24 hour loan.

Poor ride, the gearchange on the one I had made second gear very difficult to engage when cold, silly pricing, no auto and superior Audi salesmen.

Designed not to impress. Bought a Jazz instead. (when sold it was rust free at 13 years old)

Can’t remeber if you have bought the BMW i3 Madf but this is the spiritual successor to the A2 ?

Yes... Rust free, some silly features (rear doors) but fast and so far reliable.

What’s the ride like Madf and do you have the range extender ?

Imagine the local indie can work on the i3 too having no ICE ?

Did you buy from a main dealer ?

Here's someone who appreciates their A2. And as for someone earlier in the thread claiming they are wheezy, there's always the 1.6 FSi 0-60 in 9.5 seconds.
