Mazda 3 2014 petrol 2.0 - Calling all Mazda Pros - Jon Morgan

Any views on the sound of this engine before I make a 2hr round trip would be really appreciated. Its loud with slight top end rattle. But doesn't jump out to me as hugely appreciated.

Thanks as always

Can I delete last post?

They all sound kind of rough don't they? I presume that clicking is the fuel pump?

Mazda3 2014 2.0 - Working link All mazda pros - badbusdriver

My recollection is that it doesn't sound as bad as the last one.

I did go back to that thread so I could compare but couldn't, because the video has been "removed by the uploader" (not sure why you'd bother removing it?)

Sounds normal enough to me, I've had one for nearly 7 years now. Is much quieter with the bonnet down. On a side note, that engine bay could do with a good clean :-)

Thanks for sticking with me on these posts guys. This is what I needed to hear. A thorough check and a test drive and hopefully this should be sorted.

Cheers

Hmm, sounds rough to me, never had my head under one so that maybe normal?

I reckon timing chain (or is it a belt). Does it quieten down when hot?

Mazda3 2014 2.0 - Working link All mazda pros - Jon Morgan

Yes, there's a.toming chain tensioner that wears and can cause rattle apparently. Will.see what garage warranty covers if I take it straight to a garage... unless anyone rates the AA RAC prepurchase checks?

I recorded a video of my own for you to compare against. This is a cold start after sitting for a few days unused.

Skyactiv_G_Cold_Start_and_Idle.mp4

On starting, the ignition timing is retarded to warm up the catalyst quickly. It settles down after about 10-15 seconds into a more normal idle. The second part of the video is at idle after a few minutes once the blue temperature indicator has gone out.

Few things of note, the ticking sound is the high pressure fuel injectors doing their thing. They run at very high pressure in this engine (in the order of 3000 psi) compared to other petrol engines.

Also, this engine can switch between otto/atkinson cycle combustion on a whim using electronic phase control on the intake cam. Under atkinson running, some of the intake air is pushed back out of the cylinder into the intake manifold which can sound a bit boomy, for lack of a technical term.

As I said previously, nothing in the video you posted above, OP , sounds out of the ordinary to me, based on my own personal experience after nearly 7 years of ownership. With that said, treat all used cars with suspicion until you can assess it yourself.

Happy hunting and you need anything further, don’t hesitate to ask below,

Regards,

M

Agreed, my Ford Sigma engine sounds the same, particularly when cold - ticking injectors.

What a useful post Mord! Good of you to do that, I'm sure the op will find that most useful.

On the subject of ticking injectors my previous Vitara was quite loud when cold whereas my current Swift is very quite even with the bonnet open.

Thanks all, particularly for the video Mord.

It certainly isn't as clean and smooth sounding as that, but doesn't sound hugely different and intend getting it tuned and any work done ASAP.

Thanks again all!
