Learner Drivers - David Horn
Did anyone watch this program on ITV tonight? The appalling quality of some of these drivers is such that they will still be dangerous even if they do pass their test.

The lady called Sue will NEVER reach a decent standard of driving - she has no understanding of roundabouts or other drivers. If she passes her test it will be indicative of how we let dangerous drivers onto our roads.

Mind you, it's easy to see where these appalling drivers on the roads come from....

Sue's examiner will require some ear defenders or a bleep box!

It's frightening!

The producers seem to have trawled for those with the lowest intelligence and worst attitude.

Trawled? I think you are being too kind to the population - these punters should be tested to use the remote control on thier TVs.

Yep - you can rest assured they'll have chosen pretty much the very worst they could find and probably encouraged them to exaggerate their behaviour. Tend to agree that anyone who's failed 19 tests will probably never pass and shouldn't be allowed to. That woman was an accident waiting to happen and should be electronically tagged to keep her off the roads. Mrs V (also a recent learner) was watching and felt much better about her abilities as a result though. Although I've always told her she's doing very well indeed she didn't really believe me.

Incidentally what about the 2 blokes in the passenger seat - have you ever come across 2 more gormless and emasculated individuals ? I wanted to slap them!!

Volvo, how are Mrs V's reverse hill starts doing?
Learner Drivers - volvoman
Hi CM, well she hasn't tried one yet but she did manage to spin the Felicia's wheels going up the hill a couple of weeks ago and I've never been able to do anything like that :)

Lots going on so I'll drop you an e.mail later this week.

I've posted about this before - surely, after failing X times, the authorities should/must say: "Sorry for you, but you are gormless. You ain't never going to make it. no more chances."?

A friend of mine didn't learn to drive until she was 34, because prior to that she had been at university and then lived in London, where there was no need to drive.

She replaced her ageing Pug 205 XS last week with a less aged Pug 206, as she realised that she had spent £6500 commuting to London (from Manchester) over the past 12 months. She said that she wanted a newer car as it would make her feel safer on the motorway.

She drove to the dealers. It was the first time I've been in a car with her driving (I'm usually the taxi), and after the journey my only comment to her was that learning to stay between the white lines on roundabouts, use her mirrors, and do shoulder checks, would be far more beneficial to her safety than a new car!

She told me that even her driving instructor had been surprised that she passed her test first time.

I am convinced that her wing mirror clipped a guy sweeping the road!

After reading this article:
tinyurl.com/yphzf nothing on the itv program would surprise me!

Perhaps it is time either candidates were screened and refused tests if they had a history of violent behaviour or alternatively examiners had body guards with them during tests. I suppose with today's technology you could have the entire thing done in a simulator with pre-arranged situations that the candidate would have to cope with and have the examiner assess them remotely.
