Hi-viz or not ? - Andrew-T

Front-page news in today's Times says that a US study has found that 'hi-viz jackets and reflective strips ... can make cyclists and pedestrians invisible to modern car safety systems'. The vehicles tested were a Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5 and a Forester. 'Every time, the Honda and the Mazda hit a dummy with strips without slowing' - the Forester was rather better.

The crucial piece is missing how those cars were detecting obstacles. Was it via AI interpretation of camera image or mm wave radar?

The article is only a few column inches, only mentioning AEB (autonomous emergency braking) using cameras or radar - so could be either.

Subaru use Eyesight camera technology mounted behind the interior mirror.

However isn't the idea of hi viz to make you more visible so the driver can actually apply brakes and not rely on tech?

Yes, but as more of the driving actions become part of the car, it will not be a surprise if some drivers expect to do less ?

Some people seem to be great enthusiasts for autonomous braking. I saw a post recently on another forum about a chap driving his wife's car and having a 'moment' because he'd forgotten it didn't have auto-braking.

I've only driven one car with auto-braking, a hired Golf.that I found maddening. It repeatedly braked just as I moved my foot to do it myself - what does that teach a driver? Not to bother?

It also braked hard when it 'saw' a car joining the dual carriageway ahead of me - I was in lane 2 at the time.

If drivers start leaving it to the car to do the braking, will we be more, or less, safe?

Some shades of ho viz are not that good under some streetlights either though retro reflective strips will hopefully be picked up by headlights. Saw this near Russell Sq in London. Guy in old fashioned fawn 'mac' showed up way better than cyclist in orange hi-viz.

My Skoda Fabia had auto braking usually preceded by an 'attention getter' audio alarm. It caught me a couple of times in the same near home.

It's a dual carriageway that curves to the left and moves out of trees as the speed limit increases from 40 to 50. As you round the bend visibility opens up you can see down to a traffic lit junction half a mile or so in front.

As I've looked ahead the auto brake took exception to my closure rate on the vehicle in front and slammed on the anchors. In practice I'd got the situation covered and was only not focussed on the guy in front for half a second or so.

I suspect a vastly contrasting colour to your surroundings - say bright red - might work better in many environments (e.g. the countryside) than lime green / yellow with a silvery white reflective strip.

The problem comes that in urban areas, the environment changes quite a bit and thus what works 100m ago may not so much later on. I recall that some people (can't quite remember who - it may be LU operatives) us a combo of pastel blue and shocking pink for some hi-vi jackets.

This tech surely must suffer from problems associated with the camera / detector (external ones) being obscured by objects or dirt, and similarly (with rain/ice added) for those mounted on the front of the rear view mirror as regards the front windscreen.

Some modern systems cannot pick up hi vis vests there was a reason for it but I can`t find it at the moment
