VW Transporter N reg £2K - Verdicts? - Hugo {P}
Ladies and Gents

A friend who is emigrating is offering for sale this vehicle. I think it is the shorter wheelbase but can fit 8 x 4 sheets flat in the back.

It is in very good condition and has 109k on the clock. I believe it is ex Transco. It is not sign written.

Although he is in the Property maintenance trade, the van has not had much heavy use at all and is in generally good shape

He is asking £2K for it with no VAT, as he is not VAT registered.

I had thought of upgrading my Trafic, which I would probaby get £600 to £700 for (N reg 185K with a few dents).

I'm not too good on van prices - any thoughts - is it a good deal?

Trust
That compared to VW current delectations the Transporter can command the description as "Reliable"!
Seems to be a fair price when you look at what people want for Transits with intergalactic mileage

Your friend's van seems reasonably priced, if not a bargain.

Well,

I've taken a step back and considered what it is worth to me, as opposed to what the open market is.

I have given him a guaranteed price of £1800, if he either feels he can't get better or can't be bothered pushing it anymore. He and his family fly to Spain in 3 weeks. His house is sold and he already has a buyer for his car.

My Renault Trafic is a good workhorse but is on the scruffy side, I have a bulk order of wings and prayers for future MOTs, and it has done 185k.

In addition, the VW is more secure, with no rear windows and a panel between the cab and the cargo bay. My Trafic is one open area with windows in the back doors. Also, his van has a longer cargo area allowing me to lay 8 x 4 sheets (popular sizes of building materials such as plasterboard etc) flat in the back. The Trafic requires me to stand them up and postion them at an angle to enable me to close the doors. The VW also has a tow hitch.

Having said that, the Trafic is reliable and cheap, and the open area inside allows me to fit materials of up to 3 metres by folding the passenger seat forwards and laying then on it.

If my offer is accepted I would hope to get some £6 to £700 for the Trafic leaving me with a net cost of some £1200 to upgrade.

Hugo,

You're quite right to consider either vans 'worh to you', rather than someones asking price for the one they want to sell.

At this end of the market, you'll usually waste miles/ages, looking at scrap, by checking through adverts.

So if it suits you, best buy it! You only need a couple of things need sorting on the Renault, to mean you're spending MUCH more than it's value.Seen that SO many times on trade ins.

I used to work for a VW van agent in Derbyshire. Just make sure the Transporter has had its cambelt changed at the correct time because we had several "T's" in with knackered engines due to cambelt breakage, due to owners neglecting the change.

You're absolutely right! I have already had to buy a recon Power steering pump for the renault plus have its cam belt changed. That little lot alone cost me £300 and it's still worth what it was before I spent the money.

That, and image, is why I like the idea of this van. It is clean, tidy and secure. I would have no reservations about signwriting it. The Renault has served me well for a year and a bit now, and has more than earned its keep. Even if I scrapped it now I would say that I had got my money's worth out of it.

However, if I got say £600 for it I would be pleased as it cost me £750 when I bought it.

This seems to be a minimum price for latish mechanically sound vans with long MOTs around here. Its year of registration (1996) would probably generate a lot of interest.

John

Thanks for that tip. If I cannot verify the cambelt change, I'll probably get it done straight away anyway.

I'll let you know how I get on.
