Hands-free telephone kits - Roger Jones
My brother-in-law is looking for a hands-free telephone kit to fit to his new Mondeo. If anyone has any recommendations or opinions, I'd be most grateful for them.

Mrhandsfree has won a number of awards, and I know people who think it's great. Its self contained plug-in type that amplifies received speech to a speaker and takes yours through a separate microphone. As well as apparently being very effective, it is also neat and tidy, with no damage to the car interior being necessary to fit it. Can't remember the exact price as I write this (though think £80-£90), but the UK web site is www.mrhandfree.co.uk.

The ony reason I didn't buy one was that my employer gave me a Plantronics bluetooth headset. This costs the same sort of money, and is the best of these devices that I have tried. Of course you know it's hanging on your ear, but it works extremely well, and the battery life is superb. I have even used it once or twice at work, when people have called my cell phone, and I need to type at the same time.

I've just bought a Nokia bluetooth headset which cost £99. This is probably the smallest headset on the market and works very well with my 6310i. You just have to be within 10 metres of the phone and so can be used other than just in the car. All you need to do to use in the car is buy a cradle for your phone, £10. This solution means you have no unsightly wires ruining the interior aesthetics of your pride and joy!

There's a lot of good info on car kits and their fitting, etc appearing at users.boardnation.com/%7Esio_communications/index....p The Guy who runs it, Terry, is a mine of information.

I've fitted my own car kit in two cars, if you can do a car stereo you should be able to do a car kit too. Using the pre made leads and brackets that are available makes the job easier and neater.

Even if you have to upgrade your 'phone, Bluetooth is the way to go, in my opinion. You need to keep the earpiece charged up, but there are no wires loose in the car, the sound quality is excellent, but the mike does pick up a lot of background noise.
In my work (mobile engine tuning) it also means I can take a call without having to stop work and get clean. Biggest advantage by far, 'though, is that it can move form vehicle to vehicle with just a cradle for the handset.

I've had a kit, fitted by Halfords Basingstoke, for some months now. It works well with good speech quality both ways, fast charging (engine running only), best bit is it cuts out the radio when in use and uses the radio speakers.

Halfords?! Fair play to them, it was fitted right first time, neatly, when they said, within the hour they promised and with a phone call to get me out of the caff. when done.

Cost: £99. If you change your 'phone to a different Brand/socket type the plug in lead (both ends) cost around £20.
