I'm not talking about engines and gearboxes etc, but I read in Land Rover Monthly that the rear lights on the Discovery 200 TDi and the V8 up to 1994 (L reg with the smaller headlights) are those used on the Maestro van.

Next time you see a maestro van look at the rear lights. They are identical to those used on the Discos (with indicators incorporated).

As if that wasn't a revelation, look at the headlights from the same Land Rover. Then compare them to the Sherpa (not the LDVs etc). Apperently they are the same as well, though mine do have the Land Rover logo on them.

Apparently, the early Discoveries did make a lot of use of existing OEM parts for other Rover models at the time. The Maestro/Montego style indicator and wiper arms are an obvious clue.

No doubt this is more evidence for the anti Discovery fraternity out there. Quite frankly, I don't care, it just means that, should I ever need a back light, finding a cheap one from a breakers shouldn't pose much of a problem. I'll just tell them its for a Maestro van so the price stays low.

What other bits fit two or more completely different vehicles?

Don't forget the doorhandles from a Morris Ital.....

There's the Fiat Punto headlights on the MG SV. And tail lights from the Fiat Coupé.

The MG RV8 used headlights from Porsche.

Then there's the Noble M12 which uses Mondeo tail lights, and the TVR Chimaera which uses Fiesta ones. Then there's the current Bristol saloon which still uses Vauxhall Senator tail lights.

This thread could go on and on...
Bits used on more than one car - SjB {P}
...and the TVR Griffith with Vauxhall Cavalier tail lights mounted upside down.

Didn't the first Lotus Esprit's have Morris Marina door handles, too, and the Elise Pug 205 dashboard buttons?

I recall xx years ago a colleague limped into work, after a long trip, with an original MGB V8 with the radiator fans not working. I had a quick look thinking to wire them on permanently when I saw they were operated via a Lucas relay (the same as my 1600E) so off to local Ford dealer and MGB problem fixed.
Recently got an alternator for an old Uno from some other FIAT so well pleased for £10.

I guess the most common observation is switchgear on up market cars sourced from rep mobile parts bin,

Of course this would never happen on a BMW. Mmmmmm that alarm tell tale in the Disco looks familiar as does the courtesy light on a MINI....arrrrrrgh !

our kids rover 620 appears to have my honda's engine and gearbox in it, except where my rocker box has honda stamped his has rover, i knew they used each others parts at one time, but didn't think they would actually go as far as putting their own names on each others equipment.

i feel rather smug as my mondeo ghia reading and interior light is the same as an aston martin DB7..... i always make a point of telling my passengers.

And don't forget the old Fiesta 1.8 diesel. That used the same kind of nails you can buy in bags at B&Q...

My favourite is the Jag XJ220. Ford door locks and side repeaters (escort/fiesta) of the era. Obviously security was not high on the agenda. Wasn't the engine developed from the Metro 6R4 unit (Group B rally) or am I dreaming?

Or just do what Andy Saunders did. He built a Bentley-based car using parts from 14 DIFFERENT motors.

....and the old Volvo bumpers were the same RSJs that were used in building sites.

Also metros used the same anti corrosion measures as fiats of their time (ie none whatsoever!)

Seriously getting down to nitty gritty, I used to work for a low tech automotive components manufacturer. Although handbrake assemblies, pedal boxes etc used to be individual, many of the bill of material parts were common, beyond the rivets etc, which were standard products anyway.

Many of the component sharing examples here are from within the same group of manufacturers, eg Discovery and Rover (as was), Ford and Jag etc.

A relative used to have a Porche 924, and qickly found that Audi would supply most of the main electrical bits for it.

BTW ND, the Ital handles were never up to the job of the Discovery (they used the Marina ones), I believe they sold them to Alfa Romeo. And I understant they could never get them to work on the rear passenger doors, so they stopped fitting them!

The sidelight/front indicator on a 90's Lotus Elan is the same used as the Mclaren F1.

Also, the side indicator repeaters for the Elan are from a Metro/Maestro/Montego.

Anyone remember the Aston Martin Shooting Brake with the Escort tailgate?
Bits used on more than one car - Ben79
Nearly all new Peugeots and Citroens use the same radios and indicator/wiper stalks.

The 206 and Picasso share heater controls,

The C5 and 307 share electric window controls on the drivers door and dashboard info panels.

The same interior bits are shared in VW group companies.
Bits used on more than one car - Sooty Tailpipes
Ford Probe shares suspension, engine, transmission and dashboard with Mazda 626, despite appearing to be quite diffrent types of cars.

My Omega shares many parts with the SAAB 9-5 including the sunroof and automatic shifter.
Bits used on more than one car - LongDriver {P}
So that goes al long way to explaining why the Ford Probe and the Mazda 626 were both trully appalling cars to drive!

Surely you mean the MX6? They were built at the same factory in Red Rock, somewhere in deepest U S of A.
Bits used on more than one car - John Shelton
Surely the best current example of a car made out of different manufacturers bits has to be the Mitsubishi carisma ( ive just bought one) Renault diesel engine and gearbox, Volve running gear, Dutch made body and Japanese interior, made by Nedcar in the Netherlands. Had a longish test drive and it handles fine, very nuetral but the test car was a zero miles demonstrator and was a bit stiff, masses of space , slightly jiggly ride at low speeds but smoothes out the faster you go and cruises at motorway speed no problem. Actually only reason its built in Europe is to get around the EU anti Japanese import restrictions It has a 90% EU content so is classed as a "European car".

According to a recycled Driven this afternoon on M&M - Bentley Arnage interior full of BMW Switchgear.

Yes that too, but I didn't mention it as it was pretty rare here.
Ford took the MX6 off Mazda and a quite rarely a woman designed the Probe body. The 626 was also exacly the same in the areas I mentioned and all three are riddled with the same crappy design and quality.
Bits used on more than one car - No Do$h
Ah, wasn't aware of the 626 connection.

Haven't Mazda come a long way? The 626 was dire, yet the Mazda6 is a delight in many ways.
