VW are introducing a new entry level diesel to the Golf. A 2 litre non turbo unit with 75PS output (2.0 SDi). Why should they choose this over the 1.4 turbo unit which has the same output, far superior torque and lower emissions? Is it purely cost?

Cost mainly - the turbo and associated bits. In Europe, where Diesel is much cheaper than petrol, economy-minded locals will drive ANYTHING diesel ! The 0-60 on the 2.0 is over 16 secs !! I think the 1.4FSI would be a better choice...

75PS
Heavy car
VERY heavy engine
Mmmm, must order one. Sounds like the ideal car for the UK, given the current abuse of all things related to actually enjoying yourself in a car. Perhaps if they offer an interior trim package based on hair-shirts and self flagellation it will get some kind of backing from "Tufty" Darling.

I also suspect they make this engine for the Eastern European markets - they actually make Golf's in Sarajevo of all places - and a nice simple, big, diesel is ideal out there....
btw, don't buy ANY VAG car without the 2005 Diesel engines - naughty VW are still selling the 75bhp 1.4TDi for instance, when the new 90bhp one has started production !!

The guy from VW (Paul?) posted just before Xmas saying look out for something big coming from VW around Easter time with their diesels. Surely this wasn't it?
