This is probably one for Dynamic Dave, I've had a 1.8 Vectra for nearly 3 yrs and its been a good reliable car, but I'm thinking of updating to the 2.2 and I fancy an auto, but I was wondering about the trouble they've had with the camchain, and when would you change it and how much would it cost. Also how many miles before the autobox would give problems. Is it easy enough to change the gearbox fluid. Thanks in advance.

I am currently driving a VX Omega 2.2 auto hire car. The car is so underpowered it's not true, it is constantly searching through the box for the right gear. I know the Omega is a heavier car but it is painfully slow compared to a 1.8 Vectra.
Before you buy take a test drive in one as you may be dissapointed.

Marcos,
The 2.2 engine in the Omega is too underpowered, but in the Vectra it is fine (my opinion anyway). Also the Omega autobox is a different one to that fitted to the Vectra.

I think the gearbox IS most of the problem as the ratios don't seem right so if it's different in the Vectra it may well be a good drive.

Hi,
Well from what I was told, the camchain should be changed at 100k, but other posts that I have read here differ from that figure. As regard to the camchain problem - where the lubricating oilway blocks up due to the 20k service intervals, the garage told me when I had mine last serviced that my engine has had a modification done, and is not part of a recall, which Vauxhall were doing to owners of earlier 2.2 engines. However, don\'t take my word for this, I\'ve heard nothing official, other than that from a Vauxhall mechanic. Oh, btw, they advised me to have the oil changed at 10k intervals, not at the recommended 20k.
No idea of how easy it is to change the gearbox fluid, but as it\'s in effect the same gearbox that was fitted to the Cavalier (looking at the outer casing anyway) I would assume to change the oil would follow the same proceedure as that of the Cavalier. The only problem that I am aware of is that it *could* suffer the same problems as the Cavalier, that being the selector switch on top of the gearbox being contaminated by water/condensation and causing eventual corrosion to the inner switch contacts. This only seems to happen to a very small percentage of gearboxes. Maybe some were sealed better than others?

I had a new Vectra 2.2 auto when working in Germany this summer. I thought is was a very nice car. Did a couple of thousand km's on autobahns and through Bavarian alps, Austria etc. Gearbox seemed fine. Not an 'overpowered' car by any means, but perfectly adequate. Better handling and a lot quieter than the old Vectra.
Personally I liked it, apart from the styling.
