Have an Ford Escort 1.8 16v petrol. A slight touch of the pedal and it sounds as if the clutch is slipping but take your foot of it and it is okay. Been like this for about 15000 miles. Is this normal behaviour for an Escort or is clutch on way out ?

So, if you lightly push or rest on the clutch pedal whilst driving, the revs rise and the speed of the car doesn't?
If so, then the clutch is ripe for replacement.
Not too expensive, get it done before it causes any damage to the flywheel.

might be wrong davie, but this sounds more likely to be the thrust bearing,which is starting to get worn.there have been a couple of threads on this forum recently that will tell you how to test whether your clutch is starting to slip (setting off in second/third gear etc) that you may find helpful.

A worn thrust bearing will screech or rumble. It will have (usually) no effect upon clutch operation, unless it has broken up (as often happens)
The thrust bearing on my A4 TDi has a slight whine to it under operation. Aslong as it doesn't get significantly louder in operation, I will leave it as is.

i bow to your superior knowledge DL,
i was going by brothers G-REG escort, whereby if you just rest your foot on the pedal you get a sound like a dry ball-race spinning,this even happens when car in neutral.hasn't affected clutch operation yet, and it's done this for years!!.

It could also be a first-motion shaft bearing noise, billy.
This is a common failing on the PSA MA Gearbox used on 1.4 & 1.6 litre Rovers and not forgetting countless Peugeot and Citroen motor cars.
Either way, they can (and do....) go on making a noise for many 000's of miles before failing...
