Road signs and markings. - L'escargot
Isn't it time that we had a nationwide (and logical) standard for road signs and markings? Some speed limit signs are quite small, some are garish, some have pre-warning signs etc. Road markings sometimes make no sense whatsoever ~ when they extend right across the road it's sometimes not apparent which direction of travel they apply to. And some cross-hatched markings appear to be quite irrational. One I've come appears to be intended to discourage you from getting close to the edge of the road at a left turn ~ what is that all about?

I agree. Or at the very least a mechanism for reporting confusing signs to a central authority so that they can be investigated.

Two very silly signs occure to me straight away. One is a big signpost in Cardigan indicating a right turn. But it is positioned opposite the turn before the one it applies to, so all strangers take the turn into a housing estate instead of the B-road intended.

The other is a large signboard in Aberarth near Aberystwyth, which has just been refurbished. It is mounted at the bottom of its supporting poles, down in a dip, so is unreadable except by lorry drivers.

A sign on a 3-lane part of the M4 near Cardiff says 'Stay in Lane'.
The instruction is never cancelled, so appears to have no end and no function.

etc etc etc

Take your point Henry.

Sign 562 - Other unspecified danger ahead - sign.

Sometimes accompanied by a plate "Dust Cloud""Accident" "Fallen Tree" etc should only be retained as long as hazard indicated on plate continues to exist or is expected to recur in near future.

Are they chopping a copse at side of road down?

The other point what is to stop anyone reporting duff signs to L.A. many of which are on the Web and contactable by E Mail.

As Henry Root would say = Go to it.

Congratulations DVD almost exactly the situation.
It was on the A312, a significant route from Heathrow to Kingston, Twickenham and Hampton Court bridges and surrounding areas. A 30 mph straight road over a straight hump back bridge.
For decades the nearside ramp had just a low chain link fence to stop vehicles rolling off the side into a single row of small trees. I do not recall any accidents on the bridge.
They removed the trees to construct a pavement and during the process it made it possible to roll off the side and keep rolling.
I was a commuter so I knew the situation but to a stranger the sign was not much value.
Surely a better sign and wording was possible?
Maybe a sign with vehicle tilting to the left?
Perhaps DANGER NO BARRIER?
P.S. Now the new pavement is completed, at long last an armco has been installed on the other side of the road where the children walked to school on the very narrow pavement.
Final outcome is a new covered safe pedestrian bridge.

The "Stay in lane" instruction is usually accompanied by lane markings being long broken white lines. When they revert to short broken white lines, this tells you that it is now okay to change lanes again.

"One I've come appears to be intended to discourage you from getting close to the edge of the road at a left turn ~ what is that all about?"

I've seen an example of this locally - the intention is to give drivers emerging from the side road a better view of oncoming vehicles on the main road by moving them out slightly.

Think the one of the craziest systems must be in the Republic of Ireland, all speed limits are shown in MPH all distances are shown as KM.

You spend your entire journey dividing by eight and multiplying by five to see how far you really have to go, and they say mobile telphones break your concentration!!!

Northbound on the M5 just south of Birmingham is a single 50mph sign. It occurs just before a shallow bend, I've always assumed it is a leftover from when they rebuilt the motorway in the 80's.
There is of course no derestriction sign to end the 50.
