I had this job done on my Discovery 2 years and 12K miles ago, and now it needs doing again for the MOT. Have I been ripped off? Be interested in your thoughts, thanks.

I assume you mean due to knocking ball joints??
This short life is very common in the LR world sadly. Not a main dealer job I assume?
Thing is there are so many pattern parts for these vehicles and some are rubbish, you have to be so careful.
I mean if you go into a trade motor factors and ask for part "X" it might be £14.95 plus vat...trade.
Go to some mail order sources and they might be selling a set of four "X"s for £10 inclusive. How do they do it? Well the quality is very poor.
I'm very careful about the pattern/non-OE brands I'll use.

Thanks - no, not a main dealer job but a specialist (beyond my level of competence I think). It was pattern parts so I guess it's as you predict with such components.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the drag link?
New discovery owner needs to know.

It is the arm that goes between the steering box and centre tie-rod.
It pivots out of the steering box like an arm and is connected to the centre tie rod via a ball joint. as the drag link moves in an arc, the centre tie-rod move left-right to steer the front wheels.
There is also usually an idler and in the same place as the drag link but on the passenger side.
