Windscreen treatment - AndyT
I'm having some trouble getting rid of some type of water marks from my windscreen, and wonder if anyone has seen a UK outlet for this treatment, www.diamondite.com/welcome.htm ,or similar?

The marks are most noticeable on colder mornings with a heavy dew. The wipers appear to move the water, but there are erratic marks left behind. Once the heater gets up to temperature the effect is less of a problem.

Andy,

I think I know exactly what sort of marks you are talking about - the marks left by drops drying. The car I just PDI'ed had these. Very difficult to shift. I used Halfords Intensive Glass Cutter (in a blue bottle) which did the trick. It is a sort of T-cut for glass. It contains micro abrasives "carefully selected to clean glass effectively without scratching."

But I would not recommend using this product on anything but a new windscreen as, in my experience, it shows up all the tiny imperfections of an old one e.g. gravel rash.

Try a glass polish such as Autoglym.

Thanks for that, I didn't realise Halfords did such a product. I reckon the windscreen is only about 6 months old, being a replacement due to stone damage. I noticed the marks not long after the RAC fitted it, but then with the warmer weather it's not been so bad.

Please be very careful what you use on glass. I just tried to polish a very light scratch off a screen and finished up with an area about 4 ins by 1 inch, all round the scratch, of further very light scratches - like a light frosting effect! Groan! It was a household cleaner called Astonish; very good at what it is meant for but not windscreens. Years ago I wrecked the windscreen on a Citroen SM by using a nylon pot scourer to remove squashed bugs! Glass seems to be quite soft and very easily scratched!

try using coca cola ! i joke not, its been used for used for years in the aircraft game as the best bet for removing all kinds of debris from aircraft windscreens, including rain repellant residue which is virtualy impossibe to shift with anything else

I wish somebody would make some black paste which would fill all those miniscule sand chips you get on cars that have been on the motorway alot. This would stop the light catching them in full sun, and make them invisible as your eyes wouldn't see the black miniscule dots like it does a pin-prick of sunlight. I tried mixing black dye with autoglym screen cleaner years ago, but to no avail.

I use a couple of tablespoons of cheapo malt vinegar in a pint of warm water and a soft cloth to clean my windscreen, then polish with scrunched-up newspaper while still wet. Always works for me.

Coke is also very good for cleaning up jewelrey, leave gold to soak and it comes out like new.

Out of interest Coco Cola contains weak phosphoric acid, see scifun.chem.wisc.edu/chemweek/H3PO4/H3PO4.html
Vinegar is, of course, acetic acid. So they are both very good for dissolving alkali stains such as lime deposits. I think that a lot of glass cleaners contain either, or both acids.
Coke and vinegar are a lot cheaper than Autoglym glass cleaner!
