Assuming the the news came from the Daily T, let's face it, the petrol price is creeping up again anyway. In the local Sainsburys @ Ipswich it's already 74.9, so another 1p on a litre is not going to make much difference. Besides, are you going to stop buying the stuff.
Let's face it, Uncle Tony & Gordon have other things to worry about. I mean, why would a by-election that once had Ken L as it's MP, (not-known for his middle of the road views, no pun intended) suddenly go to the Lib Dems. Ooppps! Getting political there.
As an aside. Very sad to see the Motorcycle Museum go up like that, and all down to a thrown fag end...(allegedly)

Just playing with figures ... Our petrol price is about R4 a litre. (I don't know exactly) which is a Govt-controlled price. This equates to about 30p.
Our Govt sets the price every month, and it has come down a lot recently. The price INCLUDES all the taxes, road accident fund contributions etc. And remember, we also have to pay for SASOL - the oil from coal plants which were built by the old regime ...
Now, UK has a price 250% larger... and UK/US coalition is de facto in control of oilfields of Iraq.
Something's not right.
What % of the pump-cost is actually for petrol, and what else do you pay? (Vat, duty, Tony Blair's retirement fund etc etc etc?)
|
Approx 25% of the price of petrol is for the petrol itself. The rest is tax of one sort or another.
Same for beer
fags
wine
spirits
etc
etc
etc
anything that\'s fun really!

Graham,
As I read in the Telegraph - big Gordons increase is in TAX - not related to the price of fuel?

Was I alone in the following word coming to mind?
THIEF!
Also, how come Scotch Whisky can be taken thousands of miles accross Europe and sold for less than a third of the price here?
THEFT!
Tony, Gordon, us motorists have had enough of you.

If it's so bad, why don't you all just emigrate? A direct comparison of costs between countries is too simplistic. Other taxes, incomes, education, health system, environment etc all have to be taken into account. I saw a quality of life index in the Economist magazine a while back, which was compiled using such factors, and the UK did pretty well. Besides, wasn't it the Tories that introduced the fuel tax escalator? Do you really think it would be much different if IDS was running the show? I don't think so. You'd all be moaning about having to fork out for private medical insurance so some other such thing.
Mutter, mutter, mutter....

1.28p per litre (or 5p per gallon, depending on preferred measuring system)?
Well, it's going to be more than that, isn't it: 1.28p plus VAT at 17.5% equals 1.5p because, let's remember, we have to pay VAT on the tax element of the price per litre as well as on the actual cost of the fuel (tax on tax - good one!) Add to that the rounding-up which will doubtless be applied by all the filling stations and we will end up paying 2p per litre more, which works out at getting on 9p a gallon.
(Apologies if anyone has already pointed this out - posted in haste)

I forgot where I heard/read it lately, but if you're more worried about a meagre 1p on the price of a litre then where the next well for drinking water is, it just gives you a new slant on the priorities of life, does it not?

I DID emigrate - diesel - 0.70 Euros per litre (£0.49/£0.50), "road tax" around £50 per annum, NO TV licence, "council tax" around £150 per year. Where ? Spain's Costa del Sol!
Why work when you can sleep?

This increase was in the last budget speech so its hardly news. We'll be looking at 80p+ per litre again.

I live in Devon, am about to start work in Exeter. It would cost about £2 a day in fuel and nothing in parking as I will be working on Marsh Barton Industrial Estate. It will cost £4.40 return on the bus into Exeter bus station, then a 10 minute walk to catch the Matford Park and Ride, which costs £1.35 return. Total cost £5.75. Anyway, I start a 0800, and this bus service would get me in at about 0845.
Total travel time in car: 25 mins
Total travel time on bus: 1 hour
Sorry Mr. Blair, you are going to have to do a lot better and actually put more money into public transport down here for people to leave their cars at home!
|
Exactly, and your figures assume the bus will turn up! They can make petrol as expensive as they want, but we will just buy more economical cars.
For me the figures are:
Additional money spent a year on a car instead of public transport - £2000 pa
Time saved a year by using car instead of public transport -approx. 400 hours
Cost per hour £5 - absolute bargain
