Assuming the the news came from the Daily T, let's face it, the petrol price is creeping up again anyway. In the local Sainsburys @ Ipswich it's already 74.9, so another 1p on a litre is not going to make much difference. Besides, are you going to stop buying the stuff.

Let's face it, Uncle Tony & Gordon have other things to worry about. I mean, why would a by-election that once had Ken L as it's MP, (not-known for his middle of the road views, no pun intended) suddenly go to the Lib Dems. Ooppps! Getting political there.

As an aside. Very sad to see the Motorcycle Museum go up like that, and all down to a thrown fag end...(allegedly)
Petrol Tax up by 5p per Gallon from 1/10 - Ian (Cape Town)
Just playing with figures ... Our petrol price is about R4 a litre. (I don't know exactly) which is a Govt-controlled price. This equates to about 30p.
Our Govt sets the price every month, and it has come down a lot recently. The price INCLUDES all the taxes, road accident fund contributions etc. And remember, we also have to pay for SASOL - the oil from coal plants which were built by the old regime ...
Now, UK has a price 250% larger... and UK/US coalition is de facto in control of oilfields of Iraq.
Something's not right.
What % of the pump-cost is actually for petrol, and what else do you pay? (Vat, duty, Tony Blair's retirement fund etc etc etc?)
Petrol Tax up by 5p per Gallon from 1/10 - LongDriver {P}
Approx 25% of the price of petrol is for the petrol itself. The rest is tax of one sort or another.

Same for beer
fags
wine
spirits
etc
etc
etc
anything that\'s fun really!

Graham,
As I read in the Telegraph - big Gordons increase is in TAX - not related to the price of fuel?

Was I alone in the following word coming to mind?

THIEF!

Also, how come Scotch Whisky can be taken thousands of miles accross Europe and sold for less than a third of the price here?

THEFT!

Tony, Gordon, us motorists have had enough of you.

If it's so bad, why don't you all just emigrate? A direct comparison of costs between countries is too simplistic. Other taxes, incomes, education, health system, environment etc all have to be taken into account. I saw a quality of life index in the Economist magazine a while back, which was compiled using such factors, and the UK did pretty well. Besides, wasn't it the Tories that introduced the fuel tax escalator? Do you really think it would be much different if IDS was running the show? I don't think so. You'd all be moaning about having to fork out for private medical insurance so some other such thing.

Mutter, mutter, mutter....
Petrol Tax up by 5p per Gallon from 1/10 - paulb {P}
1.28p per litre (or 5p per gallon, depending on preferred measuring system)?

Well, it's going to be more than that, isn't it: 1.28p plus VAT at 17.5% equals 1.5p because, let's remember, we have to pay VAT on the tax element of the price per litre as well as on the actual cost of the fuel (tax on tax - good one!) Add to that the rounding-up which will doubtless be applied by all the filling stations and we will end up paying 2p per litre more, which works out at getting on 9p a gallon.

(Apologies if anyone has already pointed this out - posted in haste)

I forgot where I heard/read it lately, but if you're more worried about a meagre 1p on the price of a litre then where the next well for drinking water is, it just gives you a new slant on the priorities of life, does it not?
Petrol Tax up by 5p per Gallon from 1/10 - malteser
I DID emigrate - diesel - 0.70 Euros per litre (£0.49/£0.50), "road tax" around £50 per annum, NO TV licence, "council tax" around £150 per year.

This increase was in the last budget speech so its hardly news. We'll be looking at 80p+ per litre again.

I live in Devon, am about to start work in Exeter. It would cost about £2 a day in fuel and nothing in parking as I will be working on Marsh Barton Industrial Estate. It will cost £4.40 return on the bus into Exeter bus station, then a 10 minute walk to catch the Matford Park and Ride, which costs £1.35 return. Total cost £5.75. Anyway, I start a 0800, and this bus service would get me in at about 0845.

Sorry Mr. Blair, you are going to have to do a lot better and actually put more money into public transport down here for people to leave their cars at home!
Petrol Tax up by 5p per Gallon from 1/10 - bartycrouch
Exactly, and your figures assume the bus will turn up! They can make petrol as expensive as they want, but we will just buy more economical cars.

For me the figures are:
Additional money spent a year on a car instead of public transport - £2000 pa

Time saved a year by using car instead of public transport -approx. 400 hours

Cost per hour £5 - absolute bargain

These statements usually start with 'The goverment has announced plans.....' - they are merely testing public reaction. Us motorists are a captive audience and in Britain, we will put up with anything. Unfortunately, 'thief' is just the right word - the only thing that the government understand are farmers and tractors. Will they let it get to 80p+ again ?

When the fuel strikes or whatever they were called were on last time (September 2000, I think), I bought two 20 litre jerry cans and made good use of them as well as two 5 litre cans I already had. I'm not saying that I stored petrol because I think that's illegal isn't it.

I never queued more than 5 minutes for fuel and that was only once, I filled up at 11 PM when everyone else was watching the dispute unfold on Newsnight or whatever.

I'm ready for the next one...

How else are we going to pay for the extra expense of the Iraq war? I don't think a window tax will go down too well either.

Bottom line is the cash has got to keep coming in to pay for this and that. We are a captive (very large) market who have to pay no matter what.

LOL!

On the subject of stocking up on fuel, I'm aware that petrol goes off rather quickly (and have located an additive to stop this at my local farm machinery store).

What about diesel? Any long term problems with storage? Volatility is unlikely to be an issue but are there other things to consider?

Increase of 1.28 in duty which presumably the garages will put a mark up on + VAT

So a minimum of 1.504p per litre.

There was another thread on this the other day, IIRC.

you\'re right, there was, which is why I\'ve merged them. DD

It bugs me beyond all possible reason that they have the crust to charge VAT on tax. What\'s that about? VAT was supposed to be a tax on luxuries. You can hardly call fuel excise duty that.

Dead right the garages will round it up. Can\'t have ha\'pennies floating about. I think we can safely say 2p a litre on the forecourt. It\'ll be even more than that if they raise VAT to 20%, which I have heard they are considering.

I\'m so grateful that I get the opportunity to help the Treasury out when they get their sums wrong. Not.

Anyway. Not much good moaning about it, it\'s not as if anyone in HM Government has ever actually *listened* to anyone.

Agreed, I think that it is wrong that we should have to pay tax on a tax.

A lot of people think that VAT is a tax on luxuries, it isn't.
Value Added Tax was designed to be a tax that is levied every time a product is handled, has 'value added' to it. Therefore the manufacturer charges the wholesaler VAT, the wholesaler charges the retailer VAT and the retailer charges you VAT, the only difference is that they can all reclaim the VAT but you can't.
Very, very few things are VAT exempt these days, but a few are zero rated, VAT charged at 0%. Basically, apart from the exempted items such as newspapers, everything has a VAT rate, standard rate is 17.5% but electricity and gas is at 5%. Most people think that all food is zero rated or exempt but a trip to a cash & carry is quite an eyeopener as the items are all listed with their VAT rate. For instance, orange juice is zero rate but a drink like Sunny Delight attracts VAT.
A very European tax, VAT, lots of bureacracy, silly rules and form filling.

What should be, but probably won't, set against this rise in tax, is the fact that oil (Nov. delivery) is quoted today at $25.5, down from the $28-29 barrel summer price.

Add in the current $1.66 to the pound, and we should have seen a reduction. Bet we don't.

So, day before the increase in fuel duty I go along to my local Morrisons and fill up, paying 74.9p a litre. Driving past yesterday I notice that far from going up by 1.whatever pence a litre, the price has actually gone *down* to 73.9p....
Petrol price 'increase' - guss
some supermarkets have absorbed the increase. very nice gesture but not sure whether its a favour to the public or their friends in the labour party!!
Petrol price 'increase' - paulb {P}
My local Sainsbury has a poster outside saying "Fuel prices held until 9 October". Guess we get it in the shorts then....
Petrol price 'increase' - Wales Forester
Our local Esso went up to from 73.7 to 75.2 last Wednesday, but by Friday morning had dropped down to 72.7 in response to the local Asda filling station cutting their pump price.

So our fuel increase is -1p per litre......which is nice. :-)

PP
Petrol price 'increase' - SteveH42
Absorbing it I can understand, being able to absorb it *and* reduce the price by a further penny seems rather odd.

And of course, being a cynic I do wonder that as they knew the price increase was coming whether they didn't just hike the prices a couple of weeks back so we wouldn't notice and they could get some positive PR from it...
Petrol price 'increase' - LongDriver {P}
So the oil companies have been coining it in for the last few months and decided NOT to pass on the tax increase as they might have ended up being at the pointy end of any fuel protests that might have materialised if they did perhaps?????
Petrol price 'increase' - SR
I noticed a number of local filling stations seemed to take the opportunity to put their prices up by about 3p a litre or more.

However, the bright spot is local Asda at 73.5, and the Esso station quarter of a mile away also 73.5. Funnily enough, the BP station a quarter of a mile the other way is 77.9 a litre - and people are still using it!!! Until we start being a bit smarter about where we buy fuel, the oil companies are going to take every opportunity to rip us off.
Petrol price 'increase' - smokie
I don't reckon may people are actually aware or bother how much they pay anyway.

Especially those who get their fuel paid for by their company. (I do, but I am aware...just to prove myself wrong!)
