For some time now the red paint on my Carisma's upper surfaces has faded from a bright red to pink. I was convinced in my own mind that a respray of the affected parts would be needed to restore the finish.

However, a goodhearted body shop manager supplied me with a litre of 3M's FINESSE-IT finishing compound. Using this, the original paint colour rapidly reappeared and with a coat of Autoglym polish it looks like new. If not new, then at least near enough. I am quite taken aback by the thought that a miracle cure for such problems may exist. I suppose you do not get something for nothing so I will see how the bodywork fares over the winter.

Though if one should wish to sell such a car in a hurry it is at least one method of recovering the situation.

I've been told that this is quite common with red cars. Apparently red pigment is more affected by light, so fades more than other colours. I have noticed an awful lot of faded red cars on the roads. Maybe a UV filtering polish would help?

Last week I saw a current model Fiat Punto whose red paint is already fading and losing its gloss after only a couple of years. I once had an MG Maestro which did the same. It seems non-metallic red paints are prone to the problem and perhaps should be avoided.

My father's tornado red Audi 80 was resprayed just before its third birthday in 1994 under warranty (but as it was coming back off lease and going to the supplying dealer for resale, it's not surprising).

Parents currently have a Colorado red Focus and I suspect that one will be going when it's three (it's not quite one yet) for much the same reason.

This ised to be a major Ford fault, especialy in Fiestas and Escorts. For some reason though it seemed to affect the bonnet more than the rest of the car - many a Fiesta I have seen with red wings and dull pink bonnet!

I guess the most resilient car colour is silver. Looks the best too IMO!

Vagelis.

VW Tornado red was notorious for becoming Tornado pink. It seems to be the 'redder' (darker?) reds that suffer most, as opposed to the more 'orangey' ones, if that make sense. Totally agree about silver, Vagelis (looks out at silver Leon, glinting in the sun (which won't fade the paint)).

Yeah, but I have yet to see a Z4 look better in any other colour than bright red! :-)

As it spends a lot of time in the garage fading shouldn't be a problem, especially as it is Diamond Brited twice a year and may even see some Auto Glym in between...

Blues used to go funny as well. They either go dull or get a funny kind of oil on water effect.

Yup Silver is the way. (looks out at metalic silver Laguna - yummy) I have to say i am deeply impressed with the quality of the paint on this car. Its thick (yes i have a stone chip) and lustrous, very well applied, no orange peel, no paint runs, no underbody areas i can see where its not evenly applied. Even where chipped, the matching grey undercoat is doing its job well.

The fact that lead is no longer used, plus it's all water-based paint these days = faded red colour.
Hard water, washing, or not washing & waxing, don't help, either.
Yep - time to get out of bed on Sunday morning, again!!

I had a 1986 year BMW years ago, and a front wing had been replaced before I owned it, the paint on that wing went dull and pink after a few years. I went to have it repainted with two-pack paint, and the man said the ammonia in T-cut causes that on a certain type of red paint, can't remember whether it was acrylic or cellulose, and he said two-pack didn't do that.

At least Ford fixed their "Silver Fox". Anyone else remember all the MKII Cortina's with peeled bootlid and bonnets?
