A few years ago and nearby to where I live, a road was equipped with speed humps (of the 'flattened pyramid' variety).
Subsequently these humps came to bear the deep scars of many a strike (presumably sumps, gear boxes, suspensions etc. which no doubt came off worst).
These deep gashes have now been marked up with white aerosol paint. Would be interested in backroomers' views as to what the purpose of such markings is.
(Clue: a particular pothole in this same road was similarly marked and has now been topped up with asphalt to its full height).

Yes indeedy they spray white paint around areas that need to be repaired so the crews can see what they have to do and where to do it

i once did work experience at the councils highway and transportation dept near where i live and as part of it got to go out with one of the staff and mark places in the road that need sorting out, scars like you mention and pot holes and things like that, then a few weeks later the road mending people come along and fill in the gaps!!!

Don't waste the opportunity - get some white spraypaint, and make sure they patch up the whole area outside your house!

Why is repairing the road the ultimate in cynicism? Damaged road surfaces break up in frosty weather and are a hazard: the last thing you want is a pothole on top of a road hump, now do you?

Maybe I didn't describe properly.
The local authority appear to want to replace the bits that caused extreme grief to cars, and which are no longer there as a result.
So as far as I'm concerned the humps can erode right back to road level.

Of course it could just be that the local garages hadn't reported a big enough rise in speed-hump related damage repairs so they're going to increase the size of the bump to cause more...
(Well, it's in keeping with the theme of the thread!)

Actually a friend of mine did that! Next door neigbour built a garage and therefore needed a drop kerb. The planner came out, sprayed whie paint on the path marking it out and sprayed the words "DROP" in the area.
So my friend next door gets a can of white pray, and copies the pattern outside his house hoping to get a free kerb drop.
The workmen painted "DEAD" next to the word drop! Did I laff?
