Hi there people :)
I've been thinking of picking up a Mondeo at auction, and was wondering if any of you more regular auction-goers have any idea about the typical value of these at the moment?
I'll probably have about £3k to spend, and would be after a tidy Ghia X model with decent paintwork, but mileage isn't much of a concern to me.
What would I be looking at getting? I found the report of an £825 98R LX in HJ's auction roundup the other week quite encouraging - I should get at least a 98R Ghia X 2.0 for my budget, right?
Cheers!

Michael;
Don't wish to knock Mondeos at all, but everyone's got one haven't they? If it was my £3K, I'd go for a 2.0GLS Omega. Reckon you'd get a '98 R, or perhaps even a '99 S or T with a few miles on...

I agree NB. Omegas were at very low prices at Colchester auction last week. If I hadn't managed to get the Saab I was after I'd have gone back the next week for an Omega-less common than Mondeos and look better.

I don't intend to buy just yet, so waiting is something I'll be doing.
As for everyone having one, that really isn't something that concerns me. I buy a car for me, and I buy a car which I like. What everyone does is of no consequence to me, except when something breaks, when its nice to have plenty in breakers yards ;)
As for the Omega, I guess its worth considering but my two concerns there are that they are supposed to be quite unreliable, and also not as nice to drive to as the Mondeo. Also the fact that to get a top spec one with leather etc, you need to get a V6, which at 19 I cannot insure.
Thanks for your help.

A 98R Mondeo Ghia X with high miles could probably be had for not much more than half your budget, Michael.

Excellent, that sounds great. How much would I be after for a tidy example? When I say tidy, I don't mean immaculate, but just in decent enough condition so that it doesnt have lots of scratches etc - something I could spend an afternoon polishing and be pleased with the results rather than cursing the scratches :)
I know Mondeos are everywhere, and Mondeos are boring, but they are very reasonably priced these days, the Ghia X has plenty of toys to play with, and it's a respectable modern looking car to boot.

Looking at Autotrader, you could pick up a 2000 V/W reg for about £3000 with high miles (ie 100,000+) Bargain or what? At Auction of course you'd pay even less.

Michael,
Given your email address, shouldn't you be getting the train?
On my recent visits to Blackbushe,
90K miles 2.0 Ghia 99T's have gone for £2,400
80K miles 2.0 Ghia 00W's have gone for £3,350
I'd suggest you go to a decent auction, and just have a look at the prices they are going for. Then pop along the next week and be prepared to bid if the prices you've seen make sense. Also, watch HJ's auction reports and look for prices dropping.
I think you get the best bargains if you don;t go with a particular model in mind - you then have more cars you can bid on, so losing one of them isn't a problem and you tend not to overbid.
At the auction, try to look traderish (see what they look like on your first visit) and watch like a hawk when you're bidding that you're not up against another non-trader, or prices can go silly.
Hope this helps,
V

Perhaps I should be getting the train, but I think that'll stay as a hobby ;) I need reliable and comfortable transport as well, hence the Mondeo ;)
I'm encouraged by the prices quoted here. Been to the auctions a couple of times - makes a great day out even if you are not buying (That sounded a bit anorakish eh), but there was a distinct lack of high spec stuff at my local.
Whilst you say dont go with a particular model in mind, I've got plenty of time to choose so would rather wait to find that nice Ghia X - I don't want to be changing car for a while after I've got this one, so I may as well get one with everything I could ever want on a car :)
Bit of confusion regarding the Ghia X 2.0 specification though. Firstly, does it really have rear drum brakes? That suprised me when someone told me - my 94 Xantia SX (Not even top spec) has rear discs. Secondly, is Traction Control standard on the 2.0 or is it just the 2.5's?

And on eBay:
cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2430...4
Someone has just paid £3700 for a P-plate Ghia X (new shape). Admittedly it has very low mileage (66k) and sat nav (£500) but I'd still be delighted with that if it were my car.

And the digits dont look too straight on that speedo!
|
|
Not too straight on my 1999 Mondeo either (a surprisingly-similar-to-the-ebay-car 68k), they never have been. I am 110% confident that mine is genuine mileage.
|
It was only the first digit that made me suspicious. I think £3700 is a hell of a lot for that car.
I bought a mondy at auction with 59k on the clock- unwarranted milleage, no history. On the drive down to london it clicked round to 60k and the numbers were all over the place! Straightened up after a while. I wasnt too bothered other than worrying about the cam belt, because it drove realy well.
|
My '96 mondeo has done 32,000 miles and the digits are all over the place! Definately genuine mileage (I've owned it from new).
I keep thinking of changing it, but its got everything I want (A/C, multi-CD, etc) and I think it might have just about stopped depreciating!
