Peugeot 406 hdi 90bhp noise - kyle richmond
i have a like hissss and rattle when i accelerate upto 3000 rpm then it dissapears, the car picks up ok its just the noise, but when reving the car at stand still the noise is not present just the usual slight hisss which is normal but when put under load the noise appears again, does anyone have any ideas what it might be

No its more than a normal hisssssss it sounds like a rattle up to 3000 rpm then dissapears

When my 1.9DT made a noise like that, it was the crankshaft pully coming loose and rattling. I didn't figure out what it was until it fractured. Has the cam belt been changed recently? If so the person who did it may not have loctited the bolt as you are supposed to.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh

Yes, the crankshaft pulley on the HDi engine has a habit of becoming 'unbonded' and becoming loose. The inner and outer parts of the pulley are insulated with a rubber 'buffer' and this disintegrates with heat, leading to a ticking noise.

Common problem this, most Peugeot Dealers keep the pulley/bolt in stock.

Yes ive heard of that problem before,it has had a new belt recently,but why would the rattle dissapear at approxx 3000rpm sharply

My peugeot 406 hdi seems to have a clattery/whistle if i put my foot down hard but once i get to around 3000rpm it just dissapears sharply, ive had the noise since ive had the car over a year now, the car seems to pull fine, its just diagnosis of the noise, anyone had the same problem or any ideas?

Id be 99% sure this noise would be the crank pulley, extremeley common on these engines

I know....but the crank pullies *usually* make a clatter at idle/acceleration if they are worn out/broken.

They can indeed make a rattle up to 4000rpm, in normal service conditions.

Hi Kyle, ive just read a question you sent to Honest John going back a few years now ,about an engine rattle on a 406 Hdi.Mine has EXACTLY the same symptoms and just wondered if you ever got to the bottom of the problem,if you can remember as i know it was a while ago.Your help would be much appreciated.Kind regards

If your rattle stops at exactly 3100 revs; then it's worn injectors. How many miles? Which HDI engine code? What year?

Thats a big help if you're right. I've changed the cam belt and crankshaft pulley and the noise is still exactly the same as before. As you mention, the noise goes away at exactly 3100 rpm - so hopefully youve saved me the £60 diagnostic fee at the citroen dealership. A couple other mechanics had failed to identify what the problem was so the dealership was a last resort. Its a 2001 (X reg) xantia HDI 118k miles - any idea what the parts will cost? many thanks!! damn, any idea how to turn itallics of - how did that happen. Never mind. More important - I got a low vibration rumbling noise that i can also feel through the gas peddle - its only there in high gear at low revs - any more insights would be greatly appreciated!

Forgot to say its the 110 bhp engine. Could the injectors just be cleaned?
