Ben,

I got it mail order from Car Colour Service in Romford - it was about £10 plus £10 P+P - in fairness they suggested I come to collect it and explained the P+P costs upfront.
It IS worth the money.

Matt,

As you've obviously used the product, would you say that it will help to remove 3 yrs worth of car wash brush marking on my dark metallic blue Mondeo without leaving buffing marks?

Thanks in advance for your help.

PP - I think the glaze may be a bit light for you needs - maybe the machine polish followed by the glaze. Could be worth trying though.

Peter,
I have only used it on a relatively new car -it does remove any swirl marks or previous polish marks.
I top it with Meguires 2 and 3 and it looks great.

PP sounds like we are in exactly the same position here. I have a state blue v reg zetec estate mondeo that i doubt has ever been polished. Mine too looks like it has had a life of car washes.

I am not sure what 3M product to get. I think i really need something to cut back the lacquer a bit.

Are all the products on the page the above link directs one to for use on painted surfaces that have been laquered, or are some to be used before the laquer is applied?

Mine's a newly acquired, previously car washed to death, X reg Mondeo Zetec in Atlantic blue Ben. If you use the link that Martin posted, there are some Perfect-it cutting compounds, not sure which one would be best though, i'm a bit wary of making the finish look worse.

The Perfect-it fast cut compound sounds good but I think the finishing glaze would need to be used afterwards followed by a good polish.

I have access to a DeWalt machine buffer but I'm also a bit concerned that it might leave more unsightly swirl marks, as they seem to show up badly on dark metallics.

I've used Farecla G3 cutting compound a while ago on a white van and I wasn't impressed at the finish in some lights so i won't touch the car with it.

We need a paintshop expert!

Good thought about the lacquer, i'm not sure about that.
Surely the marks we're trying to remove are actually in the lacquer?!

Help!

I think the ones we want to remove are deffinately in the lacquer.

But i just wondered if some of those 3M products might be used to finish the coloured paint in preparation for the lacquer.

I will be doing mine by hand. The fast cut does look good, i am just wary of polishing through the lacquer. I think i would rather use a less abrasive product a few times than risk wrecking the paint. But my thoughts are really quite worthless as i have no idea how harsh these compounds are. I think I shall have to give the place in Romford a call, and ask for their advice.

I'll try my local bodyshop next week and post the results.

Peter,
Go to Google, find 'roadfly.org/forums' - on right margin, click 'detailing forum'.
Take a couple of days off work and get some cold beer - and read how that, even if the the Americans maybe produce carp cars, they spend a lot of money keeping them in good condition.
Lot of good info on the subject, but most of the posters should get out more?

PS - I KNOW that mine is a Ford derivative!

I read it for 2 minutes and nodded off!

Some people should really get out more, i'm all for keeping the car nice but they take the cake!

Can anyone comment on the best way to *physically* polish a car? I am very paranoid these days after leaving swirl marks on a previously owned car.

Should one polish in linear lines down the car or is "circular motion" correct and I was simply using inappropriate polish (colour matched Colour Magic)?
