Hi,
Can anybody recommend a good quality tyre black dressing. I've tried loads including the sprays but none seem to match the stuff thats applied whem you pick up a new car. Dealers - whose do you use?.
Thanx.

Try Tyre Foam. Just spray on and it will fade away. Very good stuff. and not horrible to use like Back to Black.

Cant think of a name but they're all in Halfords - about £7 a can.

i also find one called "tyre shine" very good, and other half uses tyre dressing i think its an auto glym one, i'll have a root in the car cleaning stuff tonight!!! (while hes away!!)
;-))

OK here's the cheapo answer: glycerine. It's what those fancy aerosols have in them anyway...

I use Armorall protectant. But I guess any silicon based spray should suffice.

I just use silicone oil spray because we have stacks of it at work. Works a treat but I think it might work out expensive.

Black boot polish! Makes the tyre look new without the Arthur Daley shine.

Autoglym Tyre dressing is ok, so is tyre foam (armour all I think)

I've used tyre foam for years now and I think they're pretty much all the same. I tend to buy whatever is the cheapest brand I can get at the time. I'm currently using Halfords own brand and it's fine. I know you can also get these non aerosol pump varieties but I have no experience of these

I'd imagine main dealers use Autoglym

"..without the Arthur Daley shine"

which is otherwise a dead give-away. The only tyres that look new are tyres that actually are new, IMHO.

what is the stuff that the car valeters use , it looks like clear water but dries on the tyres lovely and silky shiney .they just paint it on with a paintbrush

I just started using Turtle Wax Extreme Tyre Gel, it's the closest match to the main dealer's stuff that I've ever came across, and it seems to last ok too.

It's on Buy One Get One Free at Halfords at the moment, well worth a look, and it smells great too! :-)

I'm currently using the Turtlewax one but I've a feeling the Autoglym one is better.

What one must remember, those in the trade will not go to HALFORDS ETC to buy their gear. They will go to people like autosmart or the man in the van at the auctions.
I can strongly recommend the geezer at Chelmsford auctions on a Wednesday in a white van. Buy the vinyl trim polish and a squirty bottle, cost you about £14 for a gallon, this will last you years and is the proper trade stuff (yes its see through liquid).
I would advise though, use a 2" brush to save coating your wheels and then attracting brake dust, unfortunatly the squirty bottle does get it everywhere.

I've just had a thought (while pondering why Blue sniffs tyres!) about a combined tyre polish/dog repellant to stop the neighbourhood mutts from widdling all over my newly-polished alloys!!! Maybe I should patent this idea.
tyre blacking - Blue {P}
Lol! That's a good idea, fortunately I don't have a problem with dogs using my car as a toilet. :-)

In case anyone hasn't guessed, I could smell the gel as I put it on, I did *not* sniff my tyres! I'm not that sad! :-)

At least one other backroomer has experienced the 'evidence of a leaking brake cylinder', only to find it evidence of a doggie lifting its leg, and NOT a mechanical problem with the wheel. :)

...and why are all tyres black anyway?
tyre blacking - THe Growler
I have a simple answer to all this. It is a toilet brush and washing up liquid along with a garden hose. Brings those raised white "Goodyear Wrangler A/TS" letters up a treat as well. Cost is negligible since the application and effort is included in the housemaid's job decsription.

Brill - because all tyre compounds with driving/lasting characteristics that are any good, contain carbon black in the formulation. No-one has found a variety in any other colour - yet.
