I am the new owner of an N reg, 80000 mile specimen and would like to know if anybody has any experience of this model.
Compared to my old K reg Renault 25 auto, it is a \'rocket\' and I am very pleased with it. However, it seems to be a very reluctant starter. The handbook says that the accelerator should not be touched during starting but mine will not start unless the accelerator is used. Any ideas?

Togg,
As your thread has not been responded to here, try the technical forums on either saab enthusiasts club/saab scene/ saab owners club/western saab - all www

AI,
Thanks for taking the trouble to respond. I expect I would have thought of owners' clubs eventually!!
Cheers,

You should keep your foot on the brake and it should start straight away. If you mess about doing it any other way you could wreck all sorts of things. There's no point in owning a decent motor like this and not taking care of it or trying to maintain it on the cheap. Have you taken it to the main dealer? I would do so straight away.

I, on the other hand, would take it to a decent independent SAAB specialist. There's likely to be one not too far away from you and they're likely to have seen and worked on more 9000s in the recent past than your local dealer. They'd be cheaper too. If you're in East Anglia, Abbott Racing of Manningtree would be a good place. I reckon if you gave them a ring they'd probably give you some idea over the phone.

No, not that one.

I am in contact with a local main dealer aand am trying to get one of the £70 checks referred to in John's comments about this model. It hasn't been a year since it's last service and it's only about 70000 miles ago.
I am beginning to wonder if I am just too conditioned to my last car's instant start and should let the Saab crank for longer, The handbook does talk about a 15 second maximum and they must be used to heavy startup loads in Scandinavia!
Anyway, thanks to everyone for the responses. If anyone knows of a good independent garage in the Birmingham area, please post the details.
Matthew, are you sure you're not that one?

oops!
The gremlins crept in. Obviously, for 70000 read 7000 and disregard the extra 'a' that snuck in as well!!

Our 75k N-plate 9000CDE 2.3 turbo auto is quite a slow starter (about 5 seconds usually), and can take up to 7-8 seconds in the winter (15 would be excessive). And no way should you have to touch the accelerator. Doesn't sound like a particularly expensive problem, so I'd go straight to a main dealer.

I know someone with a SAAB 9000 that develpoed a starting problem
after running out of fuel. The fuel pump only worked during engine cranking (instead of ign on)and fuel had to pumped from the tank during cranking before it would start (many many seconds). Once running it was fine and would restart instantly if it had not been left for long. If parked for a few hours it then took ages to restart again.
It was temporarily cured by fitting a seperate switched power feed to the pump - started instantly every time after that, however the pump failed shortly after that! When replaced the fault had gone.
