I believe manufacturers pay out a small fortune for the names their cars end up with. Despite this, they end up with some right clunkers in some cases, e.g. 'Probe' sounds distinctly surgical, and little else.

Backroomers can probably do better, so what's your suggestions?

For a start, I suggest:-

'Flinky' for one of the tiny town cars.

'Quantum' for something a bit grand.

May be Fizz would appeal to someone: a good name for a small car?

This leads naturally on to what people actually call their cars once the manufactuer's effort has lost interest. Ie,I call my 306 'Hugo' and the Volvo 'Doc'.

The name a maker puts on the back is only a starting point. I wonder whether anyone creative out there has go so far as actaully renaming theirs inc. new badge. Or am I just weird (expect so)?

I call my CRV Stanley - it has a personal association and so it made us laugh when we saw it on the rear lights.

I shall give this new topic further thought - trouble is whatever you come up with has to make sense in most languages and cultures.

A pizza/pasta chain is called Zizzi's,but I gather in colloquial French that's not a good idea!

There was a trend among youngsters with Isuzu pick-ups to re-arrange and delete letters in the badge to spell "Suzi", or "Uzi". Toyota badges were similarly altered to spell "Yo" which is more of an urban greeting than a name.

There was a Honda dealer in Miami (which is known for its large latin populace) called "Miami Honda". The dealer would to put a small sticker on the back of the vehicles it sold. A few owners would alter that sticker to read "Mi Honda" which is Spanish for "My Honda".

"Or am I just weird (expect so)?"

I doubt that you are weird, but if you are, at least you've got company 8-)

I can\'t think of any names for cars, but a mate of mine used to have a Ford Capri S. One night, after lots of alcohol, we decided that it would be a jolly wheeze (once he had passed out) to prise the badges off the back and using a craft knife rearrange the letters so that, displayed proudly on the back of his car, he now had a badge that read:

Ford iS Carp.

Oh, how we laughed. Best part was, he didn\'t actually notice for a full fortnight!

Cheers

You could make it more interesting and really try to get into the marketing exec's head. Try to name the car which will associate with the driver! Lets get those adjectives dusted off!

BMW stud
porsche flash
lamborghini medallion
mercedes complex
toyota onandon (recent merger with ariston)
tvr dazzle (heads in the morning sun)
volvo saga (not epic, just over 50)
daewoo borer

Slightly off-topic, but I remember seeing guitar amp logos customised in much the same way.. Marshall to 'Mosh All', Peavey to 'Heavy' and Laney to 'Lazey' were quite common :)

At the supermini end of the range would be the Quark, though it might be difficult to find even in empty carparks: "I know I can't prove it, but it just HAS to be here." The slightly more common Electron would provoke a rather more negative reaction I think.

Or perhaps 'Amoeba' for the supermini? Particularly if it split in two like that sill current advert.

The hard of hearing might be put off, thinking it was 'Omega'.

That would only work if it was a hydrogen fuelled car powered by a single cell. The sporty version could be called an amoeba proteus.

Further advancements could include a model with hairlike structures which oscillate assisting propulsion when the car is moving. This would be called the spiragira.

Toyota will never forget the embarrassment in France when they released the MR2.

"MR2" spoken in French is their word for carp.

Or Chevrolet when they tried to market their Nova in Mexico. Nova is Spanish for "won't go".
