On my astra when i am driving the temp stays about 90 and when i drive in town or going uphill the needle moves up to 100 and then settles to 97, is that normal? The needle normally sticks around 3/4 of the way, its a 94 1.4 hi torq 60 bhp engine, can any backchatters give me advice.

Sajid,

I've an Astra Diesel so it might not be too relevant, but when the head gasket was going it seemed to run steady at about 94 deg. C. all the time.

Since it was fixed normal running has it at 89 deg. C, but much greater variation apparent when going up long hills, applying lots of welly, etc. Highest peak has been 102 deg. C towing mini JCB in two axle trailer up a hill (and it wasn't just the engine that was sweating, taking it back again down the hill was interesting in a different way...)

I wouldn't worry about it - sounds like normal variation with differing loads\driving conditions and cooling system delay in reaction.

Think about trust:

1. Of course I'll still love you in the morning
2. The cheque's in the post
3. I'm from the Inland Revenue and I'm here to help you
4. The temperature of your Astra's coolant is 90C

If the car's fine, why worry what the gauge reads?
Gauges are really cheap and cheerful. Get one out of a scrappie and you can make it read what you want.
The sender for the instrument may not be telling the whole truth either.

My advice is "It's not broken, don't fix it! "

Thanks for your advice, sean, if you`re from the inland revenue can you get me a refund :)In other cars operating temps the guages read normally 1/2 way up, is this unique to vauxhall cars?

Sajid, for reference my Vectra gauge sits at approx 88 deg c under normal driving. Once the gauge goes above the 90 deg c mark the fan kicks in. Same applies to my Dad\'s Astra, and also my employers Omega and Vectra pool cars. I should mention the only time the gauge goes above 90 deg c is when stuck in traffic.

Sajid, if you look at the gauge markings you will see that it doesnt even start until 70 deg +
