Does anyone know why Morris Minors make that dreadful but unique honking noise when their drivers lift off changing up a gear? I used to wonder about it as a kid, but had forgotten about it until I heard one today!

It\'s an exhaust system resonance. It must be associated with the basic design of the system - pipe length and diameter.
You weren\'t at the Chipping sodbury Classic run on Sunday were you? The commentator commented about just this feature of the Minor as my car was at the start!

If I recall correctly, from *many* years ago, fitting a big bore exhaust got rid of that distinctive sound, so John S is correct.
However, it's not a "dreadful...honking noise"! What an insult to the Minor and its lovely exhaust note! Definitely "unique" though, as were most exhaust sounds of old.
'When I were a lad' I used to get off to sleep at night listening to cars passing under my bedroom window and trying to guess their make/model from the exhaust note. (I've always been odd like that.)

Absolutely right! Thanks for the suport on the 'Minor' front. At these old car runs you do hear a wide range of distinctive exhaust notes, whereas all the modern cars are indistinquishable.
Others that come to mind are the MGB before the 3-box system was fitted, and the mini with that mixture of gearbox whine and rasping exhaust.

another car to have that noise was the 950 and 1100 fiesta mk1 & mk2 even my fiesta mk3 makes a little noise like the old fiesta's
in human terms its like a smooth droneing noise if you get what i mean

I used to have a Marina 1.3 that made the same noise at exactly 30mph. I lengthened the tailpipe by about a foot, it didn't reduce the noise but left it a bit further behind.
Beetles used to make a nice sort of whistling noise if the tailpipes were adjusted correctly.

We have a Morris 1000 saloon which has become louder in this respect than it was, since the mild steel exhaust was replaced with a stainless one - for the princely sum of 49.25 UKP
The box is quite close to the engine and is followed by a straight section of pipe, in excess of 1 metre long, about 25 mm inside diameter, before it takes a gentle inverted u shape over the back axle to emerge by the bumper. (It is the same basic dimensions as the mild steel ones, but was supplied in 2 pieces)
I don't know if it's a Helmholtz resonator, or just a boring old pipe, but it snorts on the over-run at about 40 mph the way these things do, and also on rapidly closing the throttle during a gearchange "up".
As it's only 38 this year it doesn't have the semaphore indicators, but it does still have the starting handle, and also a heater, which wasn't original equipment on this model... now where's that nostalgia thread gone??
