When I pick up the 'new' 300SE next week (see other thread) I would like to do something to stop one blemish on the front bumper from becoming worse. The chrome has split on top of the bumper and started to lift in an area about 1cm across. I don't know how brittle it is but would like to slow the damage for as long as possible. My only thought is to spray through the split with WD40 to clear out any moisture and then seal with something even as simple as clear nail lacquer just to keep any more moisture from getting in. Any more technical solutions that don't break the bank but put off the eventual scabby bumper a bit longer?

I would use waxoyl rather than WD40. It will leave a thicker layer of wax, more difficult for water to penetrate.
I regularly use waxoyl as a winter touch up paint for prospective stone chip / paint damage areas. Looking out of the window I can see a a 18 month old patch still doing its job on the roof of the Golf! I like the idea of nail varnish, never thought of that one.

This is quite common on the W126. The chrome seems to be almost like a 'foil' wrapped over the bumper - I can't see how you'll easily stop is getting worse. It might be an idea to talk to someone who does re-chroming jobs - look in Yellow Pages.

Certainly don't waste your money on those spray tins of 'chrome' paint.
