Is it legal to park a Smart straight in rather than the normal way or is one risking a ticket? They don't stick out

No problem. If it doesn't cause an obstruction and it is parked where parking is permitted - no ticket.

So if you get two into one meter space that's OK? (Probably not, I seem to remember it being tried, unsuccessfully, by motorcyclists)

If your council can find a way of winkling more money out of you, they will, so expect both cars to get a ticket!

Some Smart owners have found that access to their cars is impossible when another car parks 'bumper to door'if you see what I mean.
Street parking in cities inevitably attracts minor dents and scratches on bumpers. A little nudge on the door of a Smart could cause considerable damage.

Technically its illegal as you don't have any relectors showing to the oncoming traffic.
A slight nudge to a door would cause no damage to the structure of the car as they are designed to flex on impact. The method to remove a door panel is to knee it very hard in the middle (it looks horrific) and this causes no damage whatsoever.
