Been offered a 2014 Passat with full dealer history and cam belt change recently plus 4 new tyres . Mot November under the extension scheme
It's through a friend who is trading in for the same car.
Not exactly what id choose but £4000 looks a bargain.

The DSG part of the description would put me right off i'm afraid!. Even assuming it is diesel (and therefore would have the wet clutch type, apparently hardier).

If you knew who'd been driving it for the past 6 years, and more importanly, how they'd been driving it, maybe. But not for me.

You also have not mentioned the mileage.

Thanks Badbus. It s got 118 k miles and driven long distances as a company car. Parking sensors not working and mot extended under the scheme.
Gearbox has been serviced by main dealer which with cam belt cost £800.
But any idea what the R stands for . It's 150 bhp apparently

The 'R Line' is just a trim level, VW's equivalent of 'Sport'.

It will have large alloy wheels (probably 18 or 19 inch) which will mean tyres are more expensive than on the standard model, 'sports' seats with larger side bolsters to stop you sliding around in corners, possibly some fancy headlights and probably a fair amount of fake carbon fibre or fake aluminium trim inside instead of the fake wood used on the 'luxury' version or grey plastic in the normal version.

For a 6 year old car, none of these particularly affect its value or desirability. It would be worth checking the coat of replacement tyres for it though as it may be higher than you'd expect.

After having a look on Autotrader, i am even more curious about the mileage. Youngest diesel auto for £4k is a 2013 model with 250k miles!.

Only 3 petrols, youngest being 2006 so presumaby diesel?.

R-Line is just a trim level. Sportier looks and interior trim, but no difference mechanically.

Given what i found on Autotrader, it does seem good value, just a pity about that DSG box............!

Well it could be diesel or petrol, no mention of engine size or mileage.

Full dealer history, top of range if high mileage diesel leave alone even if cheap. A new MOT would be useful, do you really need a big car

Normally i'd barge pole that, but from a friend and if it's absolutely guaranteed the gearbox has seen that all important oil change, even i would probably say yes to this one.

I'd also treat it to another gearbox oil change asap once i got me sweaty mitts on it.

Sorry didn't mention it's a 2 litre blue line diesel but no ad blue.
Rear sensors don't function at all and just bleeps.

One other thing, if you buy it i'd have a chat with a VW specialist (who will probably carry out the gearbox oil change as well) to see if any in depth maintenance can be done to the electric parking brake calipers to give them a better shot at a long trouble free life.

It’s cheap but very risky. Buy only if you can afford to write it off if (or rather when) the gearbox fails. Personally I’d rather sink that £4K into a slightly older petrol Mondeo, Mazda 6, Honda Acoord or Toyota Avensis Estate.

Sound advice from all contributors which i really appreciate.

Decided not to take up this amazing offer as I didn’t like the ride and also my journeys are mostly local which does not suit a diesel with a dpf

The driver loves the car and has ordered one exactly the same but will try and avoid main dealer servicing which has been incredibly expensive.
