Good old Land Rover - Morris Ox
Some things never change, and Land Rover's Solihull plant is clearly one of them - despite all the flak Discos and Freelanders get for their poor quality.

Here's something else to make you shake your head in wonder. Among the changes Land Rover workers recently REJECTED was a proposal not to smoke on the production line...

According to some union bod, workers keep rejecting even these small changes because they are concerned about the 'Jaguarisation' of Land Rover!!!!!!!!!!!

Right now, nearly all Ford's other plants are better than Solihull at quality, volume, cost and willingness to change.

Land Rover recently came 35th out of 36 in a JD Power survey.

Looks like the only way it will change is if production is shifted elsewhere.

Explains the fag end found inside the OE tyre on our old Disco when it was being re-fitted one time.

Good chaps I say. My LR is nearly 43 and still smokes so there must be something in it.

Why don't management just force a no smoking environment on the workplace under Health & Safety legislation? This is perfectly legal and protects non-smokers.

Some years ago I visited the Harley Davidson final assembly plant in York P.A. The Sportsters were all made on a relatively new line where new working practises had been brought in. Overalls, no smoking, breaks at specific times. All other models were made on a different line where the same practises that had been employed for ever still remained. Guys in Hells Angels jackets and old Levi's, smoking roly's.
And the main difference you ask.
The guys working to old practises all had big beaming smiles on their faces and on the new line they looked like any other sanitised production line in the world.
Production numbers were very similar from what I remember although I think this scenario is atypical. I think I'd smile all day if I made Harley's of the non Sportster variety.

Well smoking on the line clearly doesn't help L-R but it hasn't done Harley any harm:
