Vw polo - VW POLO 2015 tsi gearbox problem help - Knw
Hello. Wondering if anyone can help. My VW polo started to make a growling noise when going up a hill around a month ago. I got it looked at by a VW specialist and he said it could possibly be the bearings. Couldn’t book me in for another few weeks so I kept driving the car as it was intermittent. I dropped the car off to him last week so he could take it apart and inspect it and he came back to me saying the gearbox can’t be fixed and would need a new one. He put the gearbox back in, put new bearings on and new oil in but its 10 times worse now than it was before. My car is now knocking and the growling is constant. I’m really not sure what to do. I’ve had a few opinions and it sounds like he might’ve put the gearbox in incorrectly? I’m not an expert and I’m fully aware I shouldn’t be driving the car as it does need a new gearbox but the cars only done 55k and is 5 years old. Could anyone please give me some advice. Thank you

Bit confused here . Your mechanic said he couldn’t repair the gearbox , but he fitted new bearings ? If it’s completely shot , then s/hand may be an option. I would think a new gearbox is a very costly exercise.

Yeah I was abit confused too. He said he had to put new bearings in because when he took the gearbox apart he had to snap them off? Yeah he quoted me around 3800 for a new one and cars only worth about 6k so no point - thank you

A second hand gearbox from a lowish mileage car which has been written off due to accident/bodywork damage is the way to go here. Probably £300 to £400 would get one from a reputable breaker, preferably one off a car that has been driven and tested before breaking.

I'm a little surprised (and not a little suspicious) a VW specialist would mess about bodging up an already ruined gearbox, knowing full well it would be a matter of days or weeks before the box had to come out again.

Soon as he took the thing apart it should have been obvious and the search for a used box started that moment, or did you authorise a rebuild on the off chance it worked? either way all that labour involved in removal and refitting has to be performed again.

At first he thought it was just the bearings when he test drove it. He took it apart and said it was un-servicable after having it for 6 days, he advised me that it would need a new one putting in as he won't even look for a second hand one for me. I told him I can't afford that and would need the car back so he put it back together, he said he's put new bearings on and new oil. I'm just not sure what to do, never had issues with a gearbox so i'm clueless

You now know that was a wrong move to have him put the box back in, but you were not to know, to be honest he doesn't sound the most helpful of chaps, most good indies will try and mitigate the costs for their customers including sourcing used major units, failing to save you money means you might as well be using the main dealer.

Just remember if you source a gearbox which proves to be faulty, it's your risk all the labour involved continually removing and refitting.

If it were me i would be inclined to find another mechanic in your area, possibly by recommendation via a VAG forum or ask around friends and workmates for a good place, a good make specialist indy should have ready contacts for such used parts and have a good working relationship with them, this is the case with my MB indy who if some seriously expensive part fails can have another one there from a trusted used parts source in a couple of days.

One thing, if you become disillusioned and decide to part with the car, do not be too keen to let this mechanic have it for a song (i've seen events like this unfold before), if it eventually comes to you selling it still faulty, advertise it with a truthful description on ebay.

Definitely was a wrong move, he test drove it after he put it back in and he knew it was worse than before. He didn't even give me a full reason as to why it isn't repairable. I just feel like i've been ripped off.

Thank you though I'll have a look around :)

Maybe try and get as much of a refund as possible from him and the take elsewhere. Did he put a nnew clutch in? If not I would try and get the majority of the cost back, if he did fit a new clutch a bit less of a refund as hopefully the new clutch can be reused.

Nope he didn’t. He charged me £500 to look at it and basically do f**k all. I’ve found someone else I’m going to take it to next week to get a second opinion because the car is only 5 years old with 55k miles. I’m no expert but surely a gearbox doesn’t give in after that long especially if it’s serviced regularly

Don’t give it to another garage. Search for a nearby gearbox specialist and have it taken there. They’re properly diagnose it and if possible repair it.

I’ve learnt my lesson now haha. I’ve found a gearbox specialist nearby and will take it to him so he can have a drive and see what’s what cause last thing I wanna do is break down. Hopefully It’ll get sorted.

A gearbox specialist is always the way to go for this sort of thing - We had major issues with the gearbox in our Fiat Panda and a local gearbox specialist rebuilt it for about £600 including a new clutch and every moving part within the bellhousing (The Fiat has a strange clutch lever/fork that can fail!). iI's been great since and the gearchange was really smooth afterwards - and still is two years later!

I restored cars for many years and managed to rebuid a gearbox in a Fiax X/19 which had a reverse gear issue - the rebuild went OK but I vowed to let specialists do this job from that day forward as everything has to be so precise and the misfitting of any component could send the job pear shaped.

Found a gearbox specialist near me who will give me a second opinion, he said it was ridiculous how I got charged so much for him to look at it and for it to be worse. This guy is going to look for free. Will keep you updated hopefully it can be sorted

Yeah I went to see the gearbox specialist today and he told me that the transmission mount has been fitted incorrectly/wrong way round. He even questioned if theres anything even wrong with the gearbox in the first place as the cars only 5 years old. Going back to him when I get paid so he can have a proper look as I only had an hour spare today. He said £80 tops if anything has to be changed and would only need the car for a day

Fingers crossed, I hope and also believe he’s right. Manual gearbox issues on this model aren’t common, in fact this is the first I’ve heard of. I’ll bet it’s something daft.
