1993 escort ghia . The alarm wont arm itself , what your supposed to do is , key in door turn to left as if your unlocking then turn to the right and hold , this is supposed to set the deadlocks and the alarm , but it doesnt .
The red "LED" display lights for 5 seconds when starting , as it says it should do in the manual , but for some odd reason it wont arm itself . Any ideas please , dont want to take it to an auto electrician as they sometimes charge silly money . HELP !>!> please ????

Is one of the sensors not being closed properly, or has the connection been damaged?

I have no idea where the sensors are located , but i can see a horn type device under the bonnet near the bulkhead(drivers side) but it has only one wired attached , I have no idea where the other wire should attach to ??

Key barrel switch on the backside of the door keylock will be the culprit - a very common problem.

About £15 IIRC, a bit fiddly to fit, but well within the reach of a DIYer

thanks for that reply , but why wont it work on the passenger side either ? Or does the one on the drivers side operate the alarm ??

I'm not entirely sure; if it is possible to operate the CDL fromt the nearside then the alarm should be able to be set from the nearside too.

If the CDL doesn't operate from the NS (Which I'm sure it does if the keyswitch is operating...) then the alarm will not arm either.

I'd start by replacing the OS key switch - an odd half-moon looking thing with some wires poking out from it.

Escorts should set from either front door. There was a concern where the spring in the locks which centralizes the lock in the off position was not strong enough and when you took out the key ,the lock was fractionally off centre, just enough not to set the alarm correctly every time.Service and production fix was a stronger spring.

How to check your sensors.

Open the bonnet,on the front cross member is a switch that triggers the alarm if the bonnet is opened, push this in about ten times-after a few pushes the alarm horn should blow as you push it-it is now in test mode-the horn should now blow as you open each door and the boot.Start the car in the normal way will take it out of this mode.

The sensors are a microswitch in the latch part of the door lock and can be seen when doors are open.

thanks for the replies, I will try and do what\'s been mentioned on here and let you all know how I get on.

"The sensors are a microswitch in the latch part of the door lock and can be seen when doors are open."

Are you sure? The last ones I repaired were on the backside of the key barrel assembly

That is the switch for turning the system on or off;how can it tell if one of the back doors or boot is open?;if you look at the latch of the door lock on the door, you will see a small microswitch-usually blue-that's the sensor.

Hi all again , I have tried the switch under the bonnet and nothing happens . Like I say all the doors boot will lock under the central locking , but the alarm ( deadlocks) will not work . Checked all fuses and all OK , what on earth is the problem here ?
