The Stig's cover appears to have been blown...
In today's Telegraph HJ's fellow columnist Anne Robinson writes about her forthcoming appearance on TG. Before driving her lap in the reasonably priced car, AR is given instructions by The Stig. She describes him as 'a very famous racing driver','quite short' and 'quite London' Surely this description can only refer to Johnny Herbert?
|
Still not certain.
Why on earth would TG disguise the involvement of a guy like Johnny?
|
A very fair comment, mate - Why indeed?
My point is that unless AR's coomments are some sort of wind-up (possible, i suppose), Herbert is surely the only person who fits the 3 descriptions she gives i.e. short, London and very famous.

Isn't there someone who fits that description but RETIRED from motor racing?
|
It's either Perry McCarthy or the french driver Minassian.
For those interested in this issue, there is a very, VERY long discussion thread here:
forums.motorsport.com/forums/showthread.php?s=c49c...0
(not sure if external linking is allowed here)
Also, if you read the last few pages of the thread, you will see many people (like me) believe there are several Stigs. Michael Gambon, when he guested, said the Stig had a very strong French accident, others guests have said he has a very working-class "sarf" London accident.
|
Multiple Stigs seem likely, indeed.
However, they have had about as much mileage out of the idea now as it will bear - I hope.
Is Stig an acronym - eg Sees Through Impervious Glass?

I'm with Chris, and I think we reached the same conclusions in a previous Stig-related thread.
Johnny Herbert's a name there's no sense in disguising and, to be blunt, I think he'd cost them too much.
If Ann Robinson meant by 'very London' that Stig seemed quite a character then I can well imagine it being the one and only Perry.
Unless, of course, it's just another smokescreen...

Well, the Stig of the famous kid's novel *did* come from a dump, so that lends some weight to the Sahf Lahndarn theory....
*ducking and running* ;)

What's a very strong French accident? A bad smash at Le Mans maybe? But a working class Sarf London accident has me puzzled. Speeding down Brixton High Street?
