Still thinking of changing the Xantia in a while, just becuase I fancy a newer car. Thinking about a MK2 Mondeo Ghia X - the family had a 98R 2.0 LX for 4 years and it was perfect, nothing ever went wrong.
Is this generally the story with MK2 Mondeo's? Is a Ghia X a good model to go for? I notice it has a fantastic level of equipment, but will it turn into an expensive nightmare?
Looking at spending up to £3000ish at auction in about 6 months. I imagine I'll be looking at T/V reg examples for that?

I used to have a Mondeo Ghia with all the bits and bobs a few years ago and in the 2yrs 60,000mls I had it nothing went wrong.

Mondeos are likely to be the second hand car bargain of the next few years IMO.
They've recently dipped below £1000 on an early plate and HJ's auction report pointed out that one went for £100 a few days back.
If you've got a few weeks or months to look there's no excuse for not picking up a fantastic deal on a fine car.

If you want a V6 and can stretch to a 00V, you will get the 2495cc 202BHP Jag V6. Earlier ones are 2544cc 170BHP which are still very good but you can bend the law more often with the new engine should you wish.
If you want a 2.0L and can stretch to a 00V, you will get a faster car too. AA Road Test has tested the 2.0L in 97R and 00V and the 00V 30-70mph in 8.8s instead of 9.5s.

I could never insure a 2.5 V6 at 19 so that one is unfortunately out :(
2.0 is probably the one I'd want. I've heard the Ghia X spec changed negativly in 1999, and that a 1998 car is preferable? Can anyone elaborate and tell me what changed?
Thanks.

Put your e-mail in your profile or ask one of the moderators to forward it to me and I can send you scans of a 99 Mondeo brochure. (I'm not a collector, I just happen to have this one!)

Have you finished your exams? Mine starts tomorrow and finishes on Thursday.

I've updated my profile with my email address. Thanks for your kind offer.
Gazza, almost. Got two more on Thursday and thats it. Then it's Uni in September :)

Cool, I should (hopefully) graduate and then it is (hopefully) Uni in Sep., awaiting EPSRC grant. :-)

Have owned 4 Mondeo's, car's were great, no major problems, dealers however were far from great.
I presume that you'll be servicing at an independent so that should not worry you.

I've owned a Sierra and a Mondeo and they had never broken down on me. Servicing can be done in Uni./student union car parks (big open space) as well as any repair work. (got my Mondeo back on the road in one week after rally damage)
Alternatively, Rapid-fit can do oil & filter change with 5w30 for around 20 pounds if you do not have time to do it yourselve.

When I was a youth, I had a Volvo 340 (1.4). The car that I really wanted was the 360GLT, which had a 2l engine, as well as having a naff spoiler!

I'm not into all that stuff, hence my current car being a diesel Xantia ;)

I don't think they should have an apostrophe.

What do I think of a Mondeo's what?

Not only Michael, I am not a rebellious youth either.
I had a Sierra as a first car and I loved it to bits until the engine was so worn that I cannot go uphill unless it's in 1st, which I wrote it off shortly after. The next Clio 1.2 was a disaster, no electric windows and central locking, etc. and it needs to be thrash to get anywhere. I missed going up from 4th to 5th and went into 3rd instead at 99mph ... so I sold it. Back to Mondeo and now QX and a Saab 9000. Now much happier with climate control, CD changer control, etc.

havent you met Mondeo? Nice chap.

I drove the Mondeo 130bhp TDCI, it was pants. You needed to use a lot of throttle to start from stand still, there was no torque below 2000 rpm.
In comparison, my HDI powered Citroen will start uphill (eg traffic jam) in 1st without using any throttle.
Ben
On my 3rd Citroen. Saxo, Xsara, C5.

If i were you i would look for a 00V 2ltr Zetec- thats what im geting next, albeit an estate.
i have had two mondeo recently, a 97R 2ltr glx, and now 98s 1.8lx. No problems with either, except for the HT leads (on both cars), with thankfully are short and cheap. Oil filter is abit of a pain in the bum to get to if you service at home. I find the seat in the later car more comfortable, and it drives better than the 97R.
If you buy at auction, just be careful to find out if the cam belt has been changed if its done a lot of miles.
