New Mondeo - Dave Etchells
I have a Mondeo 1.8 Zetec, new from Motorpoint. Great savings made and a great car to drive. BUT. The build quality is atrocious. All manner of bits and pieces are dodgy, mostly trim. However, in the last few days an alarming oil leak has developed that will neccesitate a visit to the local dealer where a grilling no doubt awaits on the purchase. All this on a car that has been on the road less than two weeks. It has only just done 400 miles today. The car was factory fresh when purchased as I saw it with all the manufacturer transportation protection at the Motorpoint site in Burnley as I had bought the vehicle unseen.
Any body else experiencing the same? I am having panic attacks as I had an ALFA 155 a couple of years ago that suffered the same build problems.
Re: New Mondeo - MMJ
Is this the new shape Y Mondeo or the older model?

It is the New 2001 Model
Shell Smartpoints - MMJ
Not totally relevant here, but as good a place as any to ask this!

I have used my shell pluspoints card on 2 occasions this month, yet the balance on the card is still zero, over 48 hours after the second use.

I have now received a second pluspoints card in my name (this time without the hyphen) and the balance on this card is zero too.

Also, the mountain of smart points I got on taking out (and using) a Shell Visa card, which should have been converted to pluspoints have also disappeared.

Of, course, ringing shell pluspoints just gives you an engaged tone!

Has anyone here had any pluspoints added to their shell account and/or smart points converted?

It makes me want to go to Sainsbury's for petrol. Less convenient, but at least reliable!

Writing this as an Air Miles collector, but more people may read this board. Posted on Air Miles Board too btw.

Thanks.

Dave,
I don't imagine you will have any problems when you got to the Ford dealer.
I bought a Vectra from Motorpoint at Derby and when I went in to the main Vauxhall dealer (Pentagon) for a cracked headlight lens a few weeks after the lad at the desk asked if it was registered with vauxhall for recalls etc.
I hadn't thought about this actually and he promptly put my details down on his computer presumably linked to Vauxhall.
So if you haven't already done so you may need to do the same for your Mondeo.
The amusing thing to me was that when I first bought the Vectra it had been standing in the showroom for quite a long time and when they started it with a battery trolley all the dash lights stayed on.
No problem they said we just run it across the road (literally) to Pentagon Vauxhall and they re-set the ECU or whatever they do.
I'll bet they like that says I. Thats their problem was the reply the car is under warranty and we often have to do this with dealers and they never query it......

Re: New Mondeo - crazed idiot
dunno about motorpoint...

but motorhouse in cannock are reported as having being found guilty of a long string of consumer/trading standards offences in page 62 of autoexpress 8-14 Aug edition...

If this helps anyone?
Re: New Mondeo - Marc
What bits are falling off and any idea where the oil leak is coming from Dave?
Re: New Mondeo - honest john
Yes, please lets have specific details of what is wrong with this car. May simply be a loose connection or may be a duff seal: the sort of thing that can happen with any new car but which might have been spotted and rectified in a proper PDI.

Re: New Mondeo - Dave Etchells
Specific faults as follows.

Front fog light seal missing, it is a third full with water. Lower seal on rear offside door cracked. Lower window trim on the same door is not aligned correctly, causing a whistle at speeds in excess of 40. The offside wiper blade
drags across the screen on the return sweep no matter how hard it is raining, despite attempts to clean the blade it still does it. The front passenger seat head rest locator peg lifts out if the head rest is raised.

The oil leak is from the lower part of the engine as far as I can tell. Certainly not from the filter or sump plug. I have tried looking with mirrors and the best I can offer is the oil is gathering between the engine and gearbox. The car is due to be inspected by the local dealer tomorrow, more info. as I receive it.

For what it is worth for anybody considering buyng this car, as far as drivability goes it is every bit as good as claimed. However, as mentioned the build quality does seem to leave a lot to be desired. Before I actually committed to buying this particular car, I looked at several at Motorpoint and Fords of Winsford and did find some minor trim defects on plenty of examples. Some obvious, some not. The spring loaded ashtray broke on one example, the sunglass case stuck open on another. Quite a few seemed to have poorly fitted centre console trim around the gear lever.

As already stated most of the faults appear be of a trivial trim nature but when looked at overall they do not inspire confidence in the vehicle. A colleague has the new Passat and while it is not as comfortable inside it appears to have been assembled correctly. I think it is a bit premature for comparisons between these two cars to be made. My experience tells me that VW are still light years ahead of Ford.
Re: New Mondeo - Dave Etchells
Forget to mention one very positive aspect. It has proved to be very cheap to insure, I had a '98 1.6 Escort LX and the Mondeo is only £26 extra including switching to protected no claims.
Re: New Mondeo - Dave Etchells
It turns out the oil leak is a duff gear box speed sensor seal. Nothing major, the dealer was ok but could'nt resist commenting on the fact that the car is an Irish import. I did point out that if they were happy to give me a 25% discount and a proper price for a part ex. then the money would be theirs.
