How much is my car worth? - jonesy127 {P}
’94 VW Golf 1.8GL, just shy of 80k, full service history. Burgandy. No rust, body is good for age, I’d say.

What do you think?

I assume I’ll get more for a private sale, but I’d certainly welcome some advice on what I should except as a trade-in offer…

There was one of these part exed in the Wrong Car, Right Car section of TopGear mag. I think it had 74k and a minor wheel arch scrape. It attracted offers around the low £2000s, so I reckon £2500-£2700 in a private sale as a starting point for negotiations. Not bad for a car that's pushing 10 years old.

Of course, I could offer you £15000 part ex for it... if you're willing to buy a Kia Magentis off me for £25000 :-) What I mean is that part ex prices are determined by how much margin the dealer has in the car you want to buy, and how well your car would fit on his forecourt, as well as how stubborn he is, rather than any kind of book value. At least in a private sale there's something closer to a free market.

I seem to remember that you are in the south east - Berkshire maybe?

No connection with these people, but if you are looking for a quick sale to the trade, your car would be perfect stock for a dealer near me that specialises in this kind of car. They are located on Fulham Palace Road in London, by Putney Bridge, just north of the river.

6 months ago I part-exd my 98 MkIV Golf 1.6 SE, 140,000 miles, with a blown head gasket, for £3500 at a VW franchise dealer in Bolton, so I think that estimates of 200-2500 are low!

And a guy who bought it several traders later recently contacted me and had paid £4500 for it! Mind you, the mileage read 70k, and he was not well pleased when I told him it had 140k when I parted company with it.
