Skoda 1.2 TSI 2015 - Air-con compressor - GtDane

Swiching noice - which in-/decreases with speed - identified by main dealer as caused by air-con compressor which needs replacing at cost of parts £800 plus labour 5.5 hrs, a total of £1,300.

Doesn't sound right. Any suggestions, please?

Wooshing or hissing noise in the ac system is usually caused by a low refrigerant charge . Unlikely to be a compressor fault. Get the system recharged and tested

thanks - should have added: it's a Yeti - but air-con just serviced (but only after 4 years by the dealer, whom I had trusted to carry out mfrs. recommendations on time, i.e. after 2 or max 3 yrs); and noise persists.

Couple of questions. Does the ac system function correctly ?(may be difficult to assess in current ambient temps) . Is the noise from the engine bay or behind the dashboard.? The cost for doing this job looks far to high , Pump change on these is around 2 hrs. (not convinced this is the problem). take a look here ;www.carparts4less.co.uk/car-compressor

thank you 'doc' - 1. mechanic stated ac working, just noisy; 2. can't tell from where as only noticeable when driving at abt 35mph or above, but guess from the bay, 3. what I wonder is, why is the 'swishing' noise's frequency (every half second or so) increasing with engine rev.? - would have thought that a compressor - like in domestic fridge - has just one 'speed'?

The compressor is driven by the poly vee drive belt ,so rotates at engine speed. Its cooling output is controlled via an electronic valve ,dependant on demand and load. When the system was recharged, was any extra lubricating oil added (should do). Trying to assess noises can be very difficult ,especially when not hands on.

That's great info (for an octogenian ignoramus). Would like second opinion but can't find specialist a-c garages (incl. HJ recomm. garages); they all appear to do all-sorts. Does anyone know of such specialist(s) in the South West, please?

Looks as though your garage is trying to fleece you! And A/C doesn't need 'servicing', apart from using it occasionally in the winter to keep it in good condition. If it's working, don't mend it. Probably just a dirty drive belt. Use a flower sprayer, or one of those spray cleaner bottles with water and a single drop of washing up liquid and spray the belt while it's idling. Listen to what difference, if any, it makes to the noise. If it gets less, it's just the belt. If it doesn't, it might be a bearing failing - unlikely in such a young car.

Thank you John F - Good - will try tomorrow

No - unable determine any noice idling/upping revs. also, switching off a-c during driving makes no difference. Will check when ambient temp high enough to warrant proper a-c working. But, frankly, now suspect it may not be a-c compressor at all! Thanks for help ...

Find a local aircon specialist who knows what they are doing. Was it doing the noise before the aircon service?

Is the coolant level OK? If low this can cause a swiching noise especially behind the dash caused by air in heater matrix.

For identifying noises from around the engine I find something like a mechanics stethoscope comes in handy:- https://www.amazon.co.uk/Silverline-154006-Mechanics-Stethoscope-320/dp/B001C0RYPG
