Driving while stoned - Leif
Walking into the Sainsbury’s car park today I smelt the scent of burning marijuana, very sweet and distinctive. A van was pulling out. I carried on walking and as the van passed I smelt it again, but fainter. The driver’s hand was resting on the open window frame, with what looked like a joint in his hand. So, what do you do? Ring the police and waste their time because they can’t look out for a van? Take photos and contact the police, but without proof that it wasn’t a roll up? Or approach the driver and politely and calmly give them an earful?

I’m disgusted that someone would drive under the influence.

Given that driving under the influence of weed is much the same as driving under the influence of alcohol, I think I might have made a note of the registration number of the van and reported it.

None of those. The first two will get nowhere (as you suspect) and the third will probably get an equal earful (or worse) in return, and put the driver in a worse mood. I suppose you might suggest that he(?) may be a dealer, but on balance I can't see any action of yours having a positive effect.

The post below (with a link included) wouldn't just be an advert by any chance?

The police don't need proof it was a roll-up, if they could be bothered to find and stop that van (unlikely) they would just do a saliva test which detects a few common drugs like cannabis and cocaine. And he would probably stink of weed as well.

I think you mean if you can find a policeman, not many around now and suspect drink driving is getting worse because of it.

I sometimes drive around town about 11.30pm to pick up family, and find lots of drivers doing well below speed limit even though there is nothing to stop them doing the limit, but driving all over the road and often just missing other parked cars going through red lights and not stopping at pedestrian crossings when they have to.

it isn't a sign of a sober driver unless they are on drugs of course...

It's a question of whether he would have been sufficiently under the influence. If I had just enjoyed a single can of Mr Smith's finest and you had noticed it plus the distinctive beery smell, would you have thought of reporting me? As for being stoned, I wonder how many are still under the influence of hypnotics (need to sleep, doc) and high strength co-codamol (an opiate pain-killer to which so many are addicted) when they ricochet through the car park.....

If they have the registration they can flag it.

I wrote in here approximately a year ago about my son getting arrested for 'drugged in charge'. Was caught sitting in his car to avoid weather while having a post work spliff. In the end the 'in charge' accusation was dropped and he accepted a caution for possession.

In days immediately following arrest he was pulled over two or three times by Merseyside Police. On third occasion copper explained his reg was flagged as possible habitual drugged driver but as he was clearly 'sober' and also polite/articulate on each stop flag would be removed.
