I have been using Hammerite rust remover and No.1 primer in the process of restoring my vw beetle, my mate has suggested that a zinc based paint would be better, directly applied to a brushed surface, rather than rust remover treated, Any ideas?

rust remover not only acts against rust it actually provides a layer of finish which can be better than zinc.

Not sure about Hammerite rust remover but I think they all use Phosphoric Acid. This combines with the rust (ferrous oxide) to form a new skin of I think a phosphate compound (come on the chemical engineers on the site, help needed here). This will be black in colour and is a protection against future rust as long as its covered in paint. You shouldn't need to use a zinc paint in this case.

A mechanic told me to try David's Zinc spray (aerosol. He said he had primed a wing (rusty, but rubbed down) and left it for a good few weeks because he'd been unable to find time to apply the top coat. He'd expected it to rust again pretty quickly - but to his surprise, it didn't!
Might be worth a shot as an insurance!

Thats exactly what my mate said C5, it would save a lot of time as well.

Zinc based paints work fine, but you may find that the Hammerite primer is designed to work with their rust treatment and may therefore adhere better. I'd be surprised if it didn't have some zinc in it anyway, but you could always use both!

Take a look at the autoexpress website product tests, they recommend Jenolite Double Act at 2.99 for 250ml.
Useful reviews on allsorts.
