Ford Escort - Discoloured, scabby roof - Alfred Rees-Glinos
Previous owner allowed car to sit out in the sun for too long. Now the roof and tailgate are quite discoloured, with parts of the original red paint turning pink, or white in a couple of areas. Paint is also quite scabby in parts. Been told that Maguires Ultimate Compound and an electric polisher will do the trick, but do I need to sand down the scabby paint first? Thanks

Any cutting compound will do the trick, including the humble and cheap T Cut.

Whether it works will depend on there being enough paint left to polish up, if it works then get a few coats of a really good wax polish on after.

This has always been a problem with red cars, even if he paint has lost some of its laquer getting it all one colour and shiny will improve it no end.

If paint has turned genuinely 'white' then it sounds to me that the red coat has gone from those areas. Paint that is still a dull pinkish-red may come back with T-cut or the like, but you won't get a decent-looking car if any of it is down to 'undercoat' without repainting.

Not sure what you mean by 'scabby' - incipient corrosion? As has been said, 70s and 80s red cars often lost their shine in sunlight, sometimes not helped by eager polishing.

Colour Magic polish in the right colour might help, but as Andrew-T points out it may be long past the point of polishing, you won't know till you try.

With any work on degraded paint you risk making the situation worse. If you want to tackle it, its best to start with less aggressive polishes and rubbing compounds. Only sand it if you know what you are doing.

If its an Escort it could be worth anything between buttons and a lot of money if its a desireble model. If its the former then by all means have a go. If its the latter then only trust it to a professional.
