I really do feel
much better now about the prospects for my mum-in-law's N Reg. Punto Selecta which (as those who inhabit the techie forum may know) has been in and out of her local garage a number of times in recent weeks with the same auto-box problem.

The garage concerned has an advert in our local rag boldy boasting:

"Ultimate Sales & Service"

Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Ford, Peugeot, Renault, Rover, MG, Vauxhall, VW, Fiat, Alfa Romeo Citroen & Volvo... SPECIALISTS.

It's nice to know her car's being dealt with by people who specialise in so few marques and hence really know the vehicles inside out. I'd hate to think how she'd have fared if she had taken the car to a mere 'generalist'!

I think you mil may be better served by one of the F.A.T.E. members There should be one in her locality. (see HJ Directories for the link)

Hi Phil - thanks for the tip. I did check the website a few weeks ago but sadly there didn't seem to be any FATE members anywhere near her. I will check again though just in case.
Unfortunately, at present the car is back with the garage who've had it since last week and still haven't come back with any feedback yet.

Hello Volvoman. If as you say, this is a Fiat dealership, then get in there and thump the counter. All Fiat dealerships have the option to use Fiat Technical Dept at Slough ( who have direct contact with Fiat Technical, Turin ) if they cannot work out what is wrong with a vehicle themselves and if they have not done so by now, they damn well should have. This has been going on long enough.
Rgds, Pete.

v - I'm not sure that a true specialist can specialise in that many different marques?

Hi Andrew T - yes it's very difficult to indciate a high degree of sarcasm in writing but that was my aim.

Hi Pete - funny but I was going to post on this subject today 'cos I just found out MIL has sold the Punto. After the last recurrence of the problem the garage had it in for about 2 weeks. They didn't charge for what they did and if they explained to MIL, she couldn't explain to me. Anyway she lent the car to her son and he had it for 2 weeks whilst his Renault Megane was off the road. AFAIK it didn't play up at all but MIL had lost faith in it by that time so had decided to get rid. A colleague of her son bought the car for his mother last week apparently but if further problems develop know doubt we'll hear about them and I'll post again.

Thanks for the reply Volvoman. It would have been nice to know what either of the cures were for future reference. Thats life!

Agreed Pete - with a complex and potentially very costly problem like this I think the more information available to the public via sites like this the better. If the car goes wrong again I'm certain It'll be hugely expensive and, if so, I'd guess I'll hear about it from MIL via her son. In fact I'll ask her to let me know so I can post. BTW - In case you're confused I should say that MIL is my late wife's mum but I still call her that even though she's not my current wife's mum. err.. I think that's clear.

Apparently James Hunt once remarked that people watched F1 not to see the driving but the crashes. Is that a big part of the appeal of the IOM TT and the reason even basic safety improvements don't seem to be carried out ?
