Okay then, here's one for everyone out there in Honestjohnland... It's probably been done before but, hey ho, let's do it again. What one dozen cars would you have in your classic car collection? (assuming that money was no object) Go for it. As ostentatious as you like. Mine? Not so exotic...

Number 1 - Reliant Scimitar GTE SE5 - Tom Karen's purest design

Number 2 - Jaguar XJ6 - Ditto Bill Lyons

Number 3 - MG Magnette ZA - Just fn gorgeous

Number 4 - BMC 1100 - Seriously. It's a brilliant design. Fave? Mk II MG 1300

Number 5 - FIAT 130 Coupe - Look at it... a 70s classic

Number 6 - Citroen DS - Amazing

Number 7 - Bristol 401 - Ageless

Number 8 - Alfasud - Giugiaro's purest design

Number 9 - Daimler SP250 - Honest. I love this car.

Number 10 - Peugeot 406 Coupe - What can I say? A future classic.

Number 11 - De Tomaso Mangusta - An early Giugiaro classic

Number 12 - Fiat Punto Mk I - Honestly. It is the biggest trendsetter ever.

So no Mini, E Type or Ferrari, but 12 cars I would love to own. What would you choose? Go to it lads (I assume you are all lads... just a guess.)

Not sure I can get to a dozen, but my list would be:

1) Jensen Interceptor III - no other car has ever managed to look so brutal yet beautiful. I would have the 440 motor rebuilt to 1969 Magnum spec with a new 4-barrel carb, rather than going the modern, fuel-injected Mopar V8 route.

2) 1965 Buick Riviera GS - perhaps the most attractively-styled American car ever, and with the optional Super Wildcat V8 with twin quads, no slouch either.

3) Renault 5 GT Turbo - simple, elegant, and such fun to drive. No other hot hatch had the same Jekyll and Hyde character (apart from the Punto GT turbo). Because the car was so light, it felt like being launched from a catapult when the revcounter hit 3,500

4) Chrysler Turbine - because who doesn't want a road-legal jet car?

Having those 4 would suit me just fine!

Cars I would want to drive and own: -

  1. Lancia Fulvia - just beautiful
  2. Alfasud - my first car(s)
  3. Lamborghini Espada - the perfect fast family car
  4. NSU Ro80 - The forerunner of all aerodymanic saloons. Compare the rear tumblehome with the Audi 100 from 1983 (Cd 0.30) - almost identical from the same company.
  5. Rover 3500 - not the SD1 - the shark look.
  6. Ford S-Max - the best MPV there will ever be.
  7. Fiat X1/9 - a pocket Ferrari.
  8. Covette C3 - the US mile muncher
  9. Honda CRX V-Tech - a real pocket rocket.
  10. Mercedes E350 CDi - my current car and possible the family sized best mile muncher.
  11. BMW i3 - having test driven one; probably the first truly practical and affordable electric car.
  12. Subaru Forester (2004). One of the best cars I have ever owned. Armchair seats, 4WD, Light pressure turbo and a very practical go anywhere car without the bulk.

I shudder at some of those rust prone money pits. At least a Ferrrari retains value when shed loads of money have been thrown at it.

Anyway, a few from me. I assume Classic means 1950s onward?

1. BMW Z1, rare, drop down doors and plastic body panels.

2. Bristol 401, there we agree. BMW based engine.

3. Gordon Keeble. Rare and beautiful with a big yank motor.

4. Bentley S3 Continental by Mulliner Ward. Not the prettiest car around the front but distinctive and rare.

5. Aston Martin DB4 Zagato. Rare and possiby the loveliest looking post war car.

6. Ford Mustang coupe, the Bullitt spec. if possible. (Even a new Mustang with the right wheels and colour would suit me.)

7.Renault Clio V6. Don't laugh. Amaze your friends by showing them the mid engine. Rare and will last if cherished.

8. Citroen SM. Rare , parts like hens teeth and possibly an enormous money pit.

9. Morris Minor, sensibly tweaked and upgraded, Plenty of parts available to make it a usable daily driver.

10.Porsche 911 RS 1973 or therabouts in lurid green and Fuchs wheels. Will escalate in value.

11.Rover P5B Coupe. I love the heavy looks- with that V8 engine and Rostyle wheels, in dark green please. I have driven a 3 litre version and that auto box was so smooth.

12.Lancia Delta Integrale. Yup an Italian money pit and possibly a rot box. But such style and rally winning performance.

I'd forgotten about the G-K. Lovely cars. And I saw a new Mustang this morning, they are an absolute bargain when you consider all the performance and toys you get.

No particular order here apart from the 1st, which i have actually been reading about today!

Fiat S76 'Beast of Turin'. 28 litre 4 cyl (yes, really) aero engine pushing out 300BHP, in 1911. 'Nuff said!.

Lancia Aprillia. People rightly talk about how advanced the design of the citroen DS was compared to anything else at the time when introduced in 1955. Same goes for the Aprillia when introduced 18 years earlier in 1937.

Citroen ami 6. The DS has already been mentioned, as has the GS and SM, all of which i love, so i will highlight this bizarre looking, though brilliantly practical and comfortable machine, which could only be a citroen!.

Fiat 128. The punto MK1 was mentioned by the OP as being 'the biggest trendsetter ever'(?). Much as i like the punto mk1, it simply took the attributes of the then ageing uno and put them in a more modern shape. The 128 however, set the mechanical template for pretty much all small cars. Transverse 4 cyl engine, macpherson strut front suspension, offset final drive with unequal length driveshafts. It was a masterclass in packaging offering up a huge amount of interior space in relation to its size.

1964 Lincoln Continental (in black). The most sinister looking car ever?

Honda Z600. Tiny mental Japanese coupe with a high reviving motorbike engine, derived from the mechanically identical N600 kei car.

Tatra 600 Tatraplan. Has any car ever had such a beautiful rear end?!.

Daihatsu midget 2. Tiny (even for the Japanese) single seat (unless you got the auto, which was a '1+1') pickup. Ideal for delivering very small things, or mobile advertising. So much fun to drive, and makes other road users smile.

Rover 90 (P4). I have had a soft spot for the lovely, gentle, discreet, quintessentially British P4 for many years now. Not really sure what it is about them, but there you go!.

Audi 100 coupe S. Possibly the only 'pretty' Audi?.

Simca 1100ti. The 1st 'hot hatch'

Honda insight (1st generation). Honda, in typical Honda fashion, goes for design and execution over practicality for their 1st hybrid. Compared to the rather dowdy looking 1st generation prius, the insight looks like a tiny spaceship with wheels. Aluminium body, small size and clever design keeps the weight down to under 900kg showing that a hybrid drivetrain needn't result in an oveweight car. Very aerodynamic too, so the fact that it does not have much power is no hinderance to high speed cruising. A true modern classic which i would love to own, very reliable and perfectly usable so long as you don't need more than 2 seats.

It's refreshing that we're not all going for a long list entirely composed of supercars, as motoring journalists tend to do. For me it would need to be cars that I'd actually want to drive, rather than museum-pieces.

1939 Lagonda drophead - probably the straight-six

1939 Lancia Aprilia 1500

1949-50 Jaguar Mark V convertible

1951 Austin A40 Devon, with the much-maligned column gearchange (my parents had one in my 1950s childhood), or a 1955 A50 Cambridge (which was my first car, bought for £65 in 1969: never let me down). Austins were much the best mass-produced cars of that era. Of all the older cars on the list, the Austin would be the one most likely to start first time.

Early 50s Bristol 402 - I think that was the convertible, even more gracious than the coupe

1970 Triumph Vitesse Mark II convertible....

....and the natural successor to it that I found - the 2010 BMW 125i 3-litre convertible that I bought last summer (the sweet spot in this range - the glorious straight-six but no turbo to go wrong)

Current Golf GTI - everyone should have a GTI at some point in their lives. I was very tempted this year but it's not quite big enough for my full-size music keyboard.

That's ten: add SWMBO's excellent Audi A1 and the Q2 2.0 TFSI that's on order and there's the dozen. One can but dream.....but I can't complain - I'm incredibly lucky to have what I have.

Might not get to 12 but let's see...

1. Citroen DS. OK so everyone has this on their list but I couldn't not have one.

2. Ferrari 288GTO. Magnum looks and two turbos.

3.Jaguar XK-SS. The best looking Jag ever.

4.Facel Vega HK500. Elegance, style and muscle.

5. Peugeot 205 T16. The prettiest Group B weapon.

6. Escort RS2000. Child of the seventies, loved The Professionals.

7. Citroen SM. Why not ?

8. Fiat 124 Dino Coupe. Neat styling, V6 ferrari engine, right size.

9.Alfa Romeo SZ coupe. Love the mad looks and V6 Alfa engine.

10. Ford GT40. So good to look at, such history.

11. Morris Traveler. Who doesn't like wood on a car ? Might upgrade the engine though.

12. Mini Cooper S. My first car was a 1967 Mini 1000

I'd like a Mustang, a Stag and a Mini. Can't be more specific about the models, I'm afraid.

The Mustang for the sheer, raw power and noise, the Stag just so that I could stand and listen to the wonderful burble of the engine, and the Mini coz you hardly ever need to use the brakes.

Re the Mustang, assuming you are thinking of "Bullitt", it is a 1968 GT390 (in Highland Green).

There was an edition of Wheeler Dealers on one of the minor TV channels the other day, and the subject of the programme was that very car.

Can't remember what colour it was when they bought it, but it was resprayed green before they sold it on. .

Lotus Esprit, - in my view the most beautiful car ever, with a not very good interior and a rubbish gearbox. I believe Lotus stopped making them because they ran out of gearboxes, why could they not redesign it beats me, I believe it was still very popular in North America

Singer Vouge MK 1 - owned one for a very short while, but restoration would have been to expensive and sadly it got scraped
