Volkswagen Passat W8 - 1.4 TSi vs 1.8 TSi Engines - fredthefifth

In a nearly new or new Passat with a manual gearbox.

Write ups seem to indicate that the 1.4 is pretty good in a Golf but can't find anything on a Passat. Wondering if the 1.4 might be a stressed engine and if the 1.8 might be a better bet but can't fnd much on that.

Anyone any thoughts?

We're going for a Skoda Superb with the 1.4TSi engine. It develops 150BHP which was previously unheard of for a engine of that size. Our current car is an Octavia 1.6TDi 105BHP. The superb has a top speed of 137mph and does 0-62 In 8.6 seconds, compared to the Octavia's 121mph and 10.4 seconds. I was very impressed when I test drove it.

Was that with a manual or auto box?

The one we test drove was a DSG, but we're getting a manual.

Test drive one - they are impressive but are very different to a diesel.

I'll only be buying petrol from now on. I have the previous gen less powerful 125ps 1.4tsi in a Superb II and it tugs it along surprisingly well and is very quiet, relaxed (not stressed) and economical on the motorway (60mph = 2000rpm). At it's best with long drives on European motorways

I was very impressed with a friends new Audi A4 1.4tsi (150)
