Been offered a lovely 50k miles 318D Touring as a possible replacement for my A4 1.9 TDI 130 2003

Does this car have the notorious N 47 engine with the rear chain? And may I have your views on its potential as a replacement for my brilliant A 4 which is getting on a bit at 135k. But has cam belt changed recently and is in great condition .

The N47 replaced the M47 in 2009 if I remember right so it will be the older unit. It is still prone to timing chain problems and plenty of other woe and certainly wouldn't be on my shopping list. I'd have more faith in your old Audi which if looked after is capable of exceeding 500k and is now (if you look after it) pretty much depreciation free as good examples of these, especially estates are sought after. This was one of the best engines and most solidly built cars VAG ever made. I'd keep it.

Couldn't agree more, those A4's are one of the most rust resistant cars ever made too, i'd be overmantaining and TLCing that for as long as possible, they really don't make 'em like that any more.

As a BMW owner and driver ... I'd agree. Keep the A4. That 1.9TDi 130 unit was one of the best diesel engines ever designed - I had a couple of A6 Avants with it in.

Really appreciate your views which has helped me to make up my mind to keep the A4
