Is there a way of getting across the channel one way with your car either by Train, Boat or Seacat and not being charged for a 5 day return ? I find this completely unreasonable that these companies do this. Roll on bright orange "Easyferries" etc.

Try coming back in 4 days.

Otherwise, no way that's "legal". Plenty of anecdotal stories about people buying day crossing tickets at each end and tearing up unused half, but also stories about being caught doing so and charged full fare. It's like most things in life, there are no methods or excuses that they haven't heard before...

My neighbour tells me that a one way is much more than 1/2 of a return - he did a personal import and the cost of the ticket reduced his (quite considerable) savings by an inordinate amount.

The opposing view is that the full return price is the economic one required to run their business. By reducing the fare substantially for short crossings, they capture business that otherwise they would not have had. Who would pay £200 in ferry costs for a day crossing, or weekend away?

Payment by Credit card only !!!!!!!!!

I am, coming back in 4 days but without the Car !!! I have heard of a way that works but is used when you are importing a car and only by using the Train.

If you get a late tunnel crossing you can get a very cheap return fare, less than £20 I think. I gather the foot passenger fare on the ferry is about £28, so can't you tunnel out and foot passenger return?

You mention "one way".......

If you and your car are going out and not coming back, then buy a day return and throw the other half away.

Its only an issue if you and/or your car want to come back.

And if you want to come one way this way, do the same but buy the ticket in France.

condition of sale of a return ticket is that if the return portion is not completed then the operator will charge the customer the diff between return and single fare, if the return fair is cheaper. By buying the ticket you agree to the T&C's.

hence you can't get a day return there, then a day return back.
you'll be surcharged for two singles.

I got my uncle a single ticket (he was moving back "home" to Italy), It was in March and was about £70 from www.ferry.co.uk (which is P&O`s budget style site)

He said he was only going one way. Pay for the ticket in cash or by cheque, so no credit card automatically chargeable, and what are they going to do ?

Come after you ? I don\'t think so, too much chance of an embarassing incident.

All companies I have tried will only take Credit Cards so they will simply charge the extra if you do not return on the day !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've bought plenty of one way tickets through the tunnel to import and export cars. I pay between £110 and £150 each time depending on season. There is no easy way round it although I did consider that you could use a credit card you were bored with to buy a cheap return and then cancel the card soon after!

Eurotunnel's website mentions the option to charge full fare if you don't use both coupons, and I know several people who commute from France to work who have been later charged for unused journeys in this way.

Frustrating particularly as I went over last Monday on a booze run for £9 day return!

Yes but you do sign up to authorise them to take further unspecefied sums of money off your card? Presumably there is something in the small print giving them this right; if not query the charge with your credit card company.

You don't "sign" anything but the Eurotunnel site says:

Click here to read the General Terms & Conditions before booking your ticket as they contain exclusions of liability.

I have read and accepted all the above Terms & Conditions:

Those terms to which you need to click to confirm agreement say:

2.1 As prices may differ according to the time or date of travel or the type of vehicle, you will have to pay a supplement if the amendment takes your booking outside its original travel validity and therefore into a different price.

4. For return bookings failure to complete both outward and return journeys invalidates your booking and you will be liable to pay for the journey completed, the difference between the price and the relevant applicable single fare.

So, it's pretty clear they can charge you extra in accordance to their T&C's.

Wonder what what would happen if your car became \"unusable\" whilst on a day trip ????????????????????

Not quite the result I wanted, but it shows that it pays to keep looking around for the best deals:

Checking various channel operaters and I discovered that Hoverspeed were doing a £50 one way special untill 31 May if booked by end of tomorrow (30 April), problem being that their last crossing is not possible for me.
So a call the seafrance, mentioning the above deal and they matched it, thus allowing me to sail at my prefered time.

Yippeeee !!!!!
