can anybody tell me what the difference with the 2 types of towbar available. witter part No is g62 or g74. both of them fit either the mk1 (g62) or mk2 (g74) vectra. the reason i ask is i already been offered a g74 cheap but i have a mk1 vectra.
will it fit?

From about 1999 (S reg ?), cars had to have a "type approved " towbars.These are plated with the test details, makers name and type approve number.Hence they are more expensive and will have a different part number than previous versions.

i know about thank thanks, what i need to know is will the new type towbar fit on the old style vectra? i would assume that they are only different part numbers because they need to be approved and not because they differ in design.

Don't forget the newer Vectra's have bigger bumpers, and maybe the newer towbar is shaped differently to compensate for that.

well i have the old shape vectra (mk1) and my dad has the newer shape (mk2). looking at them side by side there doesn't look to be any difference with the bumpers in dimension.
surely somebody has fitted one before

I fitted a type approved towbar to my 98 R (pre facelift) Vectra, I do not have the part numbers to hand. Unfortunatly I do not have an non type approved towbar to compare but if you have any specific qustion about the type approved one, I may be able to help you by going and looking at mine.
BTW if you are fitting it yourself you will have to remove a significant amount of trim in the boot and drill several 18mm holes in the floor of the boot. Make sure you paint the holes to prevent rust from starting.
One of those jobs I wish I had not started. :o)

thanks for that, i will need to get a look at the 2 different types. i have been offered 9, yes 9 mk2 vectra towbars and no mk1 towbars, second hand of course. isn't that just typical.

It might be worth a call to a supplier of towbars, some companies can be very helpful if you apporach them with the correct attitude, all you wish to knowis , are the mounting points and the box sections the same on both cars, in fact try the service dept of a Vauxhall dealer, they may even be able to help, I find the parts guy is usually the most helpful, and if he doesn't know they can usually find out very quickly.
