Ghost roundabout - Doc

How to waste £ 0.5m and confuse drivers.

An unusual traffic calming measure dubbed an "urban crop circle" has been constructed on Tenison Road in Cambridge.

The red brick circle, designed to slow traffic by confusing drivers, was completed in November at a cost of £500,000.

It's no different to the 'ghost' speed bumps that are painted onto the road. It's designed to make drivers slow down at high-risk points, rather than just blasting through.

Whilst the cost has been put at £500k, I very much doubt that is correct. A

case of 'why let the truth get in the way of a good headline'.

As can be seen from the pictures, a considerable amount of pavement, streetlight and roads work has been carried out in the area. The cost probably includes that lot too.

It is usually the case that a lot of the cost of roadworks is moving the stuff you can't see - gas, electric, water, drainage, IT cable ducting etc.

When done well shared surface works, however UK aren't very good at it. The one shared surface near me is very badly designed and its not helped by the attitude of too many UK drivers.

I dont know why the council bother with roundabouts, hardly anyone takes any notice of them, and seem to drive as though they do not exist.

At least this morning everyone has driven as though no one else is on the road, must be holiday time:(

Glad i'm off till Christmas Eve then, is it the equivalent of the Friday afternoon lemming headlong rush to oblivion?

Yes, actually the worse morning I`ve had for near misses, those drivers coming from left onto roundabouts have been looking at something else and not seen anyone else

I could see no one was slowing down or stopping so I`ve let the cars/vans go.

Its now give way to the left, and sunday drivers are out as well! what a mix
