whining noise 1220-1400rpm - mj
On my mondeo td between 1200-1400 rpm their is a strange whining noise my initial thought was turbo bearings however the dealer says it sounds like differential bearing. It occurs in gear or neutral but have not noticed it when reversing. The question is can i live with it the car otherwise is fine,if it needs to be sorted is it a gearbox out job and how much am i looking at?

MJ,

Does it do this with the engine running but when you are not moving along?

Has this just started, or has it been there since you got the car?

When I first owned one several years ago, I noticed a horrible whine when driving. I eventually go tused to it and stopped even hearing it; it was just turbo whine. I took the car from 107K to 137K miles without any problems with the engine, so if your noise has always been there, it might be OK to ignore it.

yes when you rev the car when it is stationary either in gear with the clutch in or in neutral you can hear the whine i have had the car from 51k and it is now on 76k the noise just started last november about 2000 miles ago and has not got any worse which is why i am tempted to ignore it if you are thinking turbo bearings which i am i am fastidous in letting the car idle post any journey for a min of 5sec before i switch off to conserve turbo life it was a ford dealer that mentioned the diff bearing but if the noise is there and the car is stationary surely it can not be so

I would have a listen to the cam belt if I were you. Inspect same for wear or signs of running out of true Peter

mj,

My thoughts were as Peter D which is why I asked if it made the noise before you move off.

If we are understanding each other and it makes this noise with the engine running and the clutch pushed down before the car is moving then the gearbox isn't going to be involved is it.

The revs are a little low for turbo whine, an auxillary drive belt usually squeaks so the timing belt and tensioners would be a thought for your specific noise.

Given the possible huge damage on these engines something to get checked out asap. When was the belt/tensioner set last changed?

the cambelt and auxiliary belt were changed 25,000 miles ago i think that the tensioner could be an original, one thing i have noticed is if the engine is slowly revved then you do not notice the noise it is only apparant when you blip the throttle. when driving it appears to be from the passenger side of the car if not the rear, could it be a hole in the exhaust though you would expect the car to be excessively noisy

Get another party to block the exhaust with a rag and you listen up front and underneath for any extra noise. Peter

spoken to the ford dealer that i bought the car from the tensioner was replaced cause it is not apparant when you slowly rev the car this counts out the cambelt and the tensioner was replaced however it maybe altenator bearings

Use a long screw driver to listen to the bearings and get a second party to rev the engine gentle for you. To my mind the noise at this rpm is not the bearings. Try dosing all the aux belts with talcum power to shut them up, be careful doing that. Regards Peter

i assume you think it might be a belt the alternator belt is new was replaced 500 miles ago at service the original was perished. I can see the pump drivebelt and rev the engine at the same time the pump belt is fine no signs of perishing or slipping. The only thing is when i did it this morning as advised i could not hear the whine with my head in the bay all i hear is diesel so it may well be a case of dropping the alt belt off and revving the car with me sitting in it as that is the only time you can hear the whine perhaps it has been there all along and i have only just noticed it!!!!!!!!!
