Can anyone help? how do I find the year of build on my golf from the chassis number and what the other numbers mean ?

Tried it on my Golf, and it worked.
One thing that puzzled me was the model year was listed as 2003. I bought the car last August. Surely a new model year wouldn't be introduced that early, would it?

Yes next years models always released ahead. model year is an ambiguous term meaning the specification the manufacturer intends to sell in that year.

When I worked for Ford the following year's model spec was released late August/early September. They actually had two spec updates possible, as cars were described as 1994MY, 1994.5MY and in some cases even quarter year updates.

VERY confusing.....
