And a goodbye to another one....

Goodbye to what?

Subaru have just announced that their US plant, the only one not in Japan, is increasing production by 80% - made possible by no longer having to share the plant with Toyota.

If they'd offer a Tribeca replacement, a new one they don't hit with the ugly stick, with an H6 diesel I'd go back to Subaru like a shot.

It was a sly mention of the passing of another Boxer.... a real motormouth.

How remiss of me - Mohammed Ali was a real legend in his own time, no-one, nothing else gets close.

I think that's a company wed to an idea!

I've just had a couple of days on the East Yorkshire coast and I'm sure there's a Subaru manufacturing cave somewhere! I have never seen so many including 3 Levorg, up to that point I'd only seen one in the local showroom.

My Forester has been excellent, in a few weeks I'll do a 12 month ownership report for the site.

Are you sure you saw 3 different cars on the road?

They only managed to register under 250 from July till December and roughly 45 of them are ex-demo cars (Autotrader ) sitting in a showroom near you.

Under 5,000 miles, many with a few hundred on the clock, looking for a punter with £22K+ or thereabouts rather than the £28K list price.

Defo three.

One in Whitby parked on West Cliff on Wednesday, a different coloured one in Sandsend car park on Thursday and one in Pickering yesterday.

On Thursday evening I parked in Whitby and there were two modern Outbacks in the car park. We came home via Goathland and saw a couple of older Foresters and Outbacks parked in driveways.

I generally don't see many modern Subarus, but north east Yorkshire is definately a hot spot. No doubt useful when the snow comes in and having a dealer in Middlesbrough will be a bonus to owners.

I'll look forward to it. It seems from reports that your model was an improvement on the previous.

My SG model has 104k now and still going strong, cambelt change early this year and front drop links and brake pads needed.

I replaced the rear anti roll bar with a thicker whiteline item last year, and this really reduced understeer. It's ridiculous how well it handles for an SUV type vehicle, I can understand how the low slung boxer engine and four wheel drive achieves this. Coupled with a small turbo that spins up quickly, it's a pleasure to drive.

Subaru didn't share the Lafayette plant with Toyota - Subaru built some Camry models under contract to Toyota. Much in the same way that Subaru build the GT86 under contract to Toyota. Daihatsu and Toyota have had similar arrangements in the past

I have to admit that I'd never heard of a "boxer" engine till today and really needed an animation to understand how it works. I found one here:

www.mekanizmalar.com/boxer_engine.html

There was also an animation for a horizonatially opposed engine which I've always been fascinated by - the Commer TS3 two-stroke diesel lorry engine:

www.mekanizmalar.com/one_crank_opposed_piston_engi...l

If you've never heard a Commer TS3 on the road, there's a real dearth of videos. This is the best I could find:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmM-soQnQrc&list=PL2Nh...y

Anyway, one thing led to another and I eventually found a 2CV fitted with a BMW horizontally opposed motorcycle engine:

I love it when the underdog wins! Thanks for the topic, ORB.

The Commer was an opposed piston engine, not quite the same - it had a very distinctive exhaust note.

Just as the Deltic diesel locomotive was opposed piston in triangular formation with three crankshafts - have a look at the animation here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Napier_Deltic and originated from a pre-WW2 German aircraft engine!
