usa general - Light on and nobody home ... - liammcl

Hi,
Just wondering why car's lights some on,
when the car is totally immerged in water?

Is it the instruments worked by relays that come on?

or water making contact in the manual switches ..

Also, I was tinkering with my own relic for the MOT
and here's a few lights for the ol' timers :)

ps My little beauty passed it's mot yesterday..
. no advisories too.
Many thanks to all in here who helped, and lent a guiding hand to me , over the years, along the route of diy fixing.

Cheers

The water in the switches makes the contact so the lights come on, simples!

Cheers :)
Is it as simple as that ?

The horn too?
electric sunroof?
electric windows?
reversing light ?

tbh,
I'm not even sure that the first picture is a "real one "

atm...I'm googling what happens to the electrics ,
when a car is submerged

ps an electric car seems a whole different barrel of fish :)

In a word 'No'. It is likely to be water getting into the control module that operates the lights and various other body electrical items such as wipers, horn, windows etc.

A work collegue had a galaxy some years ago and a leak allowed water into the BCM and that then caused it to wind down all the windows on a very wet winter day. Ford did repair it though.

tbh, that's what I was thunking/guessing ?
The gaps between contacts would be too big in manual switches?

I didn't know what ampage was required to activate a relay ...

I suppose there's no reason why air bags wont go off, either
if the ecu computer with small circuitry) is submerged..
(maybe they have a current leakage detection to stop that happening?)

Just seen that there are concerns about electrocution for the emergency service personell when dealing with electric cars ! (in the dry)

"Control Modules" ?

Submerged cars with lights on has been happening "for ever" - long before any car had a "module".

I thought back in them days RT that the water would have put the candles out ;)

To ellaborate a bit more on what I said earlier. A car switch submerged into water will only allow around a 25mA current to flow, that just woudn't light any external lamp on a car.

However 25mA might just be enough to energise the coil in a relay but, cars have not had relays "for ever". All my cars upto mid 70's never had them.

Wouldn't seawater conduct better than fresh?

Most of the dashboard lights come on when you get water under the drivers side carpet on the Peugeot 406. There are a nunber of multi way connectors under there and the leakage across them sends spurious messages to the ECU and instruments.
